i hold them out to her
heart pounding in my chest.
"would you like them?"
she shakes her head,
the silver necklace of a daisy
that loops around her neck
catching the sunlight of the window beside her.
"i don't have any money."
"they're a couple days old; you can have them for free."
her face lights up
and she watches eagerly as i tie them together with a bright pink ribbon,
the same shade as her strawberry lips.
