Ch 5

Kira

The only thought that ran through my head as I stared up into his chocolate brown eyes was “Holy shit, he found me.” I was definitely not expecting that; considering it’s the first time since we’ve ran, that I ever ran into someone I knew from one of the previous years—and Doug was one of those you couldn’t ever forget. I’d hurt him when I left, and it hurt me more because hurting him had been intentional.

If I’d been paying attention, I might have caught his scent.

I stared up at his face, wide eyed and breathless. “Hi…” I couldn’t tear my gaze away from his face and from the different emotions running through it. There was hurt and anger in his eyes, which allowed me to look away. I slowly backed away a few steps and looked down at the floor.

“How are you?” I asked quietly, peaking at him through my eyelashes. I couldn’t breathe standing so near him but I didn’t want to talk to him either. He’d been the only werewolf and person in general, that I’d let myself get close to.

He became one of my best friends. I couldn’t allow that to happen since I would’ve been leaving soon after, so I’d begun to push him away slowly. Then, he’d confessed he had fallen in love with me, so I had to make up a plan and leave. I couldn’t keep hurting him. He wasn’t the one I was supposed to be with; he had to find his own true mate, and I had to let him.

“What…w why are you here?” He asked, stuttering slightly. I still couldn’t look up at him; I didn’t want to see hatred in his eyes. I left him without even saying goodbye, deceived him into believing I just wanted some space to figure out things between us; and instead I’d found my way to escape.

“I… um” I couldn’t think, didn’t know how to respond. I sighed and looked up at him, ready to explain, when another boy walked up to and slapped him on his back. I turned to study the boy next to Doug.

“Hi, I’m Tony!” he said excitedly, putting his hand out for me to shake.

“Kira” I replied with a small smile.

I shook his hand then looked behind me. I could see my brother giving me a curious look as he stood there talking to a few girls. I gave him a pleading look and spoke to him through our mind link. “Help, walk me to class and I’ll tell you about it on the way.” Jayke nodded his head and excused himself from the girls and walked towards me.

Jayke stood next to me and wrapped his arm around my shoulder. He looked at Doug as if he tried to recognize him, but then just shook his head. “What’s up?”

“Just wanted to meet the new girl” Tony replied smiling. “You must be the other new kid. I’m Tony. Senior?” he asked Jayke with a raised eyebrow.

“Jayke and no, I’m a junior. Kira here is a senior” he responded with a smile and turned to look at me. “Come on, I’ll walk you to class.” We started walking away and headed towards my calculus class.

After we walked a few feet away I turned my head back and smiled. “It was nice to meet you Tony.” I said loud enough for him to hear.

I looked at Doug and my smile faltered a bit after I saw the hurt flash over his face. “It was nice seeing you again” I said quietly, knowing he would be able to hear me with his wolf hearing.

My brother looked at my face and frowned. “What’s wrong sis? Did he say something to you? I can go back over there and beat him senseless.”

I chuckled at the serious expression on Jayke’s face. I shook my head and sighed sadly. “Don’t worry about him; I was the one who hurt him.”
