It is the last shot of the game and we are down 23-21. The crowd did not talk, not even a murmur could be heard, as Katie passes the ball to me. I'm the best shooter there is but with Rainwoods defence, this was intense. The crowd got up but was silent. They knew if they made even a single whisper, I was going to miss. I looked to the clock located in the centre of the backboard. Ten seconds. Was that enough time? Of course it was. I took this time to scan the crowd. I kept the ball in safe distance from that brat Brittany from Rainwood. She was only on their team because she was caught with some guy by the principal so she chose to do basketball instead of get her nails ruined by the trash picker upper thingy. What are they called again? Actually you know what? Who cares? I take my eyes off the tensed up and excited crowd to glance at the time again. 4 seconds. I lined up the shot and bent my knees. This was it. This was the final shot. Most people would miss from the three point line but not me. My waist length hair danced around behind me as I jumped, pushing the ball through the air and into the hoops direction with one second left. As I knew it would be, it was a clean shoot. I may sound cocky but trust me, with this atmosphere, I can't miss. The hooter blared and everyone began to jump from the bleachers, lifting me up into the air and chanting my name. "Haydin! Haydin! Haydin!"
"Haydin!" I woke with a start and wiped the drool off of my crimson face. I fell asleep in class. Again.
"If I have to wake you from your ever so graceful slumber one more time young lady, I will be giving you more than just a warning. Do you hear me? Oh and by the way, you snore."
The class snickered and I could see Emma and her little group pointing at me. Oh how I wish I could just throttle her, but I know that if I did, well there goes my chances of ever getting that car. That car was the love of my life. A shiny black 1967 Chevrolet Impala was all I wanted and needed in life right now. Of course those are just dreams but a girl can dream right? I don't care what my parents say. I will save up for that car if it takes me fifty years, if only it came with two hot hunters and an adorable angel too....
"Miss Sparks. Detention! Honestly girl you never learn. Now class remember that tomorrow is your exam and that means a whole night of revision. Revision is not to be left to the last minute!" A few chuckles and murmurs went around the class. It was not like 11a to revise every second we got, only to Miss Mira's dismay. "Don't give me those! You would think I am used to it by now but if anyone fails you all do. Understood? Now for the last part of the lesson -" Thankfully the bell started its usual deafening process and we all raced to our feet. Packing our bags was not on our agenda as my fellow classmates and I stuffed books, pens, erasers, you name it, into our bags and began rushing out the door.
"Not so fast Miss Sparks." Damn it. Guess this time I was not saved by the bell. I turned around, put my best and fakest smile on and beamed at Miss Mira.
"How can I help you miss?" Miss Mira gave me a disapproving look before standing silently and beginning the process of neatly packing her things.
"Your detention is scheduled for 3:30pm today in classroom H13. Do not dare to be late." With a final serious glare in my direction she walked out of the classroom, muttering along the way about needing therapy once again. "Well come on! I do have the responsibility of closing up!" Miss Mira quickly ushered me put the door then set me on my way. I knew where I wanted to go, I just hope Baillie waited for me.
I ending up arriving at the coffee shop at around 10 past three. Some elderly couple had just entered meaning I had approximately 3 seconds before the door closed. Would I make it? Of course I would. I managed to squeeze through the door just before it shut however me being my clumsy self, I tripped and fell. Yep. I tripped and fell. The cashier glanced in my direction then smiled softly, shaking his head.
"How was your trip there Haydin?"
"Oh just do your job Calum." Wandering over to my usual spot, a booth in the very corner, I saw a pastel purple head bobbing around frantically. "What did you lose this time Baillie?"
The purple head stopped then ducked sheepishly. "Huh? Oh uh just my car keys."
I sat down next to my best friend, laughing all the while. He just smiled shyly back, obviously embarrassed at all the attention my hyena like laugh was gathering. "Sorry it's just funny how you lose something every day of the week."
"Oh yeah, real funny. So how did Maths go? Fall asleep again I hear?"
"How did you - Emma." I rolled my eyes and wasn't surprised. Word spreads fast around Bridgewater High, especially if Emma is the one spreading it.
"So when is it? The detention?"
"3:30." I glanced at my watch and gathered that I had about ten minutes left. "Plenty of time."
"Seriously Haydin? It's fine. We'll catch up tomorrow okay?" Baillie saw my pout and added it something that definitely got me out of my seat. "It's Mr Hashes' turn for detention today. Don't be late." I grabbed my stuff and threw the car keys I found under my chair at Baillie. I shouted a quick goodbye as I rushed out the door, earning a few stares and a chuckle from Calum, and fast walked all the way back to Bridgewater High. Mr Hashe was not someone to mess with. I made it to the school with five minutes to spare and started the long descend to classroom H13. This was going to be a long half hour.
