Chapter TWENTY

Sirens were blaring all around us like piercing foghorns as my friends and I scrambled up the stairwell, my eardrums being blasted to pieces. We found ourselves practically leaping up the steps in order to reach the helipad as fast as we could; it was more like a mad dash to the finish line. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before I started hearing pounding footsteps in pursuit below us. It sounded like a million heavily footsteps chasing after us. I desperately prayed we could all get out of here, preferably alive.

From the back of my brain, I felt a sharp, sudden pain that slowly grew to an irritable throbbing. I tried to ignore it at first, thinking nothing of it till much later. I was busy running for my life to give it more than a second's thought.

We managed to make it to the top of the stairwell in record time. Since I was in the lead, I was first to bust through the door that led outside to the helipad. I held it open for the others to run through. As they came out, my ringing ears managed to pick up the clobbering footsteps of the guards coming after us, the sound steadily growing louder.

Once everyone was out, I immediately closed the door shut behind me. "Rickie! Please tell me you have something to keep the guards at bay for a while..." I hollered over my shoulder, hopefulness seeping through my voice.

From what I could see, Jax and Blake weren't there yet, but I was hoping they were somewhere close; we were going to need a quick getaway here pretty soon.

"Actually, yeah, I think I do! I found this Insta-Cement spray we can use..." Rick started rummaging around in his backpack. At first I thought he was joking, but when he pulled out a black metal spray can from his bag, my jaw dropped and I gave him a funny look. He just shrugged nonchalantly before tossing it at me.

Somehow I managed to catch the can and started spraying it along the edges of the door without further questioning. Almost immediately, the gray foam I'd sprayed around the door started turning darker into actual hardened cement, effectively sealing our pursuers in.

Well daaamn! Rickie really DID have everything in that Mary Poppin's bag of his...

I silently hoped that would hold them, at least until my friends and I could make our escape.

I really hoped they didn't have a battering ram handy or anything...

I put a hand to my earpiece. "Jax, where's the chopper? We're at the Extraction Point, and we'd like a quick leave-of-absence—preferably sometime soon, please."
