I walked into Appaloosa Middle School before the first bell rang. I walked over to my locker, a nice metallic shade of dark gray. Everything was black, white, or gray to me though. My name is Shae. I'm black and white colorblind and thirteen years old. I checked my schedule, my first class was english.

I walked down the hall to room 204, Ms. Jackson's english class. I took my usual seat near the front of the classroom. I glanced at the clock. It wasn't working. Not only that, but there was a cat with three tails standing on Ms. Jackson's desk. I squinted at the cat, trying to figure out if I was daydreaming of if this was reality. I glanced around the class. Everyone was frozen in a pose, not breathing, not talking. "What's going on?" I whispered. No response. The cat leapt onto my desk gracefully, landing beside my notebook. "Hello. I am Zen." A voice smooth as silk said. I furrowed my brows. Who had said that? I looked at the cat. It couldn't have been the cat, right? Cats don't talk, especially not ones with three tails. "Shae, you are the one." Zen said. I tilted my head, confused. "The one? What the heck is that supposed to mean?" Zen sat down. "The one. You are colorblind, correct?" I nodded. "Some colorblind people can see us. We are called the spectrum. Beings with powers to change time." I was confused about three things. Number one, why was a three tailed cat talking to me? Number two, what was "the one?" and number three, how was a cat freezing time? "I only have thirty seconds now. Goodbye. Meet me at your lunch period." A moment later Zen disappeared and everyone was back to normal, acting like nothing had even happened. I had a million and one questions to ask Zen, but doing the homework I forgot to do was my first priority.
