Dear Diary,

My name is Pinkamena. Pinkamena Diane Pie. And today's my eighth birthday, which is why I got this book. Usually, our parents don't give us presents, I guess it's because they don't want us to become spoiled like the other ponies. At least, that's what they said one time when Limestone asked them.

Limestone Pie is the oldest of my three sisters, she has a bluish-gray coat and an opal gray color mane. Maud Pie is the second oldest, she has a Persian bluish-gray coat and grayish bluish violet. Next would be me Pinkamena, I have a dark pink coat with a darker pink mane. Lastly, Marble Pie is the youngest, her coat is turquoise gray, and her mane is dark cyanish gray with spring-greenish streaks.

The only reason I know this is because our parents wanted me to learn how to identify the rocks by color, and gave me this book of very precise colors for rocks. My sister's coats are very similar to the colors of the rocks, unlike mine which is pink.

Well, going back to presents in our family. Our parents are just completely against it. But my sisters and I decided a few years back that we would give each other little gifts. The little gifts are usually the unique rocks we find on the farm. You'd be surprised how many of them are actually really pretty.

This year was different, however. Like all of my other birthdays, I woke up and immediately went downstairs for breakfast. I was greeted by the rest of my family, minus Maud Pie. I took my usual seat, next to Marble Pie and the empty seat that belongs to Maud Pie. My parents handed me a bowl of rock soup as Marble Pie leaned over to me and whispered "Happy Birthday". It was barely audible but I appreciated it greatly. I nearly forgot it was my birthday as it was.

After eating the soup in silence our dad stood up and looked at us. "I want all the rocks cleared by sundown." He said. We nodded as he took his empty soup bowl back to the kitchen. Our attention then went to our mom as she cleared her throat. "Tell Maud Pie that I would like to speak to her." She said, walking away with her empty soup bowl as well. As soon as they both were gone Limestone Pie caught me in a headlock and ruffled my mane.

"Happy birthday little sis!" She said. I thanked her as Maud Pie walked into the room with a small bag. "Maud Pie. Where were you?" I asked. She pointed behind her to the field. "I got a pet." She said, holding up a rock. The room filled with 'ooh's' and 'ahh's' as we admired her new pet. "What's his name?" Limestone Pie asked, Maud Pie looked at him and then me. "Boulder"

"Wow." Was all I said, I loved her pet don't get me wrong. I just felt hurt that Maud didn't remember my birthday. But my own parents didn't even remember my birthday, so I was used to it.

Limestone snapped out of the state she was in and began bossing us around, like usual. "Well, yeah. We need to clear the entire farm by sunset. And actually make it good, Pinkamena I know it's your birthday but you still have to work. So let's get to it." She commanded, she looked to Maud and sighed. "Mother wants to speak to you." She said, before leaving for work. Marble followed her as Maud stayed behind with me to take the dishes to the kitchen.

"Happy Birthday Pinkamena." Maud said, handing me the small bag. I put down the bowls in the sink and looked at the bag confused. It didn't look like a rock, it had a smooth surface. I opened the bag and found a book. A pink book. I wasn't a huge fan of books, but the fact that Maud gave it to me on my birthday made it special to me. "Thanks, Maud." I said giving her a hug, soon after I opened it but it was blank.

"It's empty." I said, Maud nodded and gave me a quill. "It's a diary." She said. I looked at it confused still. What did that mean? What's a diary? "Do I write a story in it?" I asked. I was so confused by the gift. Maud nodded as I took the quill. "You write down your story." She said, I looked at the book and decided to just act like I knew what she was talking about. "Oohhh, makes sense. Thank you." I said.

After that, I took it to my room cause I knew I wouldn't have time to figure it out then. Now, after an hour of staring at this, I've decided what to do with it. It's my gift, I can use it as I like right?

Maud also said later today that I should hide it. Makes sense since I have two sisters and parents in the house. They can be pretty nosey at times.

That's how my birthday went. Other than getting a diary it was a pretty normal day. I wonder why mother wanted to see Maud though. I hope she didn't get into serious trouble.

Sincerely,

-Pinkamena Diane Pie
