Someone gives my shoulder a shake and I grimace, not wanting to wake up just yet. A groan escapes my lips, which feel dry and chapped. "Go away," I mumble.

"Miracle, you-" I don't give the person a chance to finish. My eyes open to the size of saucers. I jump up, causing Elena, who'd been standing over me, to back away and stop mid-sentence. I look around, scrunching my face up in confusion. Where the fuck am I?

I don't realize I'd said that aloud. Elena sits next to me. "You're in Mystic Falls." She looks at me as if waiting for that to sink in before continuing. "Your car broke down last night, there was a storm, I picked you up, remember?"

Suddenly, everything flashes by in a few ephemeral seconds. First, my frustration when the car stopped moving, then the storm and calling Elena, and then Damon. "Oh." It took a while for me to register the fact that I was in Virginia. I was so close to North Carolina, so close to her. I realize Elena doesn't know why I'm even anywhere near Mystic Falls. I'm gonna have to explain later. "Where's the bathroom?"

"Right down the hall, to the left." I give her a brief smile before jumping out of bed and leaving the room, walking hurriedly while running a hand through my wild disheveled hair. When I reach the bathroom, I slide inside and lock the door, heaving a sigh as I look around to make sure I was alone. I amble to the sink, where a mirror is hung up, and regard my reflection.

I'm not even gonna try and sugarcoat it; I look awful. What used to be yesterday’s perfect eyeliner was now a very messy smoky eye. My hair was apparently rocking the homeless look and my clothing was damp and creased. I grip the sheer black button up I am wearing. This is going to take a lot of ironing to get it back to its original state.

I wash my face thoroughly, being sure to rub away every last bit of makeup then step into the shower, washing my tangled hair and brushing it through with my fingers. I take my time, relishing the feeling of water cascading down my body and examining my surroundings. The bathroom was as outdated as the rest of the house. There was a bathtub in the corner, which I made a mental note to use while I’m still here. I got out, feeling refreshed and new, and wrap a towel tightly around me.  I grab my clothes and head for the door.

Humming a nameless tune, I start dancing while walking back to my room. And it isn’t the elegant-and-graceful-ballerina type of dance. No, it's more of a retarded-penguin-on-crack kind of dance. But who cares? I keep any eye out for Elena, mainly because I was gonna have to borrow her clothes for the timebeing. I’d already reached my room and she was nowhere in sight. So I dump my clothes on the bed and started looking for her all over the house. The wooden floorboards creak as I walk barefoot, water dripping from my hair every once in a while.

Elena was sat at the kitchen island, discussing something with Damon, who was washing a plate and nodding his head absentmindedly. She stops talking when she sees me, causing Damon to look our way. I don’t look at him, let alone acknowledge his existence. "I need to borrow your clothes," I tell Elena, who is significantly irritates that I am interrupting. But that doen’t stop me. When she doen’t move I raise an eyebrow and wait patiently for her to get up. She finally releases a sigh of defeat and gets up, leading me to her room. I smile triumphantly and follow, continuing to hum and dance like a crazed gorilla.

Her room was practically the same as mine: antique, historic and just as unsettling. I sit comfortably on the bed, inspecting my nails. The black nail polish was chipping off, making my fingers look terribly unattractive.  "So," I say, in an attempt to start a conversation, "I take it Damon is your boyfriend?"

Elena is about to open her mouth to answer, but a new presence in the room beats her to it.

"Nope." Damon is walking casually over to a chair in the far end of the room. He takes a seat. "I’m actually her boyfriend’s brother."

I raise both eyebrows. Elena is still shuffling through her clothes, trying to find me something decent to wear. I find myself resisting the urge to laugh. "That must be awkward. What's his name?"

"Stefan"' Elena says, continuing to rummage. I repeat the name under my breath. She finally turns around, but her face is concealed by a heap of clothing. "Here," she dumps everything next to me, "This should last you the next couple of weeks."

I laugh as she makes a trail for the door. "Next couple of weeks? I’m not staying that long!" Elena stops abruptly and faces me, obviously irritated. She swings her head back and stares at the ceiling in frustration, before looking at me.

But it is Damon who speaks. "We took your car to the mechanic. The guy said it’s in pretty bad shape, gonna take a few weeks to get it running again."

My heart skips a beat. I can feel my eyes ready to bulge out of their sockets. "No! You don’t understand; I need to get back on the road!"

I can’t stay here. At least not that long. Damon seemed baffled. So did Elena. I wanted to tell her everything, but I wasn't about to with Damon in the room. And even though he looked like he wasn’t even listening, my senses assured me he was.  I grab the pile of clothes and leave the room, not sparing a look at either one of them.

*

It was 4PM by the time I was dressed. It took time for me to actually find something appealing from the mass Elena gave me. I’d reapplied my makeup, this time with a proper smoky eye. My blonde hair wasn’t in tangles, but in a rather natural wave. It ended just above my shoulders, framing my face pleasantly. As I put on the finishing touches, staring at my reflection in the mirror, my stomach lets out a loud grumble.

I wanted food. And I wanted it now. "Elena! I’m hungry!’"

No reply.

"ELENA!"

Silence.

I was getting peeved, and so saunter for the kitchen. Then I hear voices. Whispers. They are coming from Damon’s room, the one where I’d walked in on him shirtless. I cringe at the memory and creep towards the room. The door is almost shut, but there is a gap big enough for me to see inside. Damon and Elena are in the midst of an intense argument, one that I definitely shouldn’t be listening to. She was whisper-shouting. I edged closer, trying to understand the mumbles and whispers.

"It can’t be him, Damon! It just can’t! Stefan is not a murderer."

"I’ve seen it happen before! He’s flipped a switch! He’s a full blown ripper, Elena!" I lean in closer.

"Damon, stop! You’re wrong, Stef-" Elena gapes at me.

Well, fuck.

It was the third time I’d stopped her talking mid-sentence today. Damon was also staring at me, but he didn’t seem as surprised. I swallow hard and move closer until I was almost three feet away. "What’s going on?" I don't get an answer, which only serves to infuriate me. I look Elena straight in the eye, holding her gaze. "Correct me if I'm wrong but, you said something about Stefan, your boyfriend? Something about him being a-a murderer?"

She seems to break down as the word leaves my mouth. She looks away, and I catch a glimpse as a tear streams down her left cheek. Damon had somehow managed to retreat all the way to the back of the room, and was watching the floor as if it were the most interesting thing since mac and cheese. They remained silent, the only sound was Damon's fidgeting. But their silence spoke louder than words ever could.

"So it’s true." Call me heartless for not dropping the subject, but this was not something you simply dropped. My cousin was going out with a murderer. How covenient? "Is there anything else you need to tell me?" Elena finally looks up at me. Her mouth moves but no words come out. I turn to Damon. He is standing still, but doesn’t looked up yet. I gulp. His act of nonchalance is clearly a façade.

They are hiding something.
