"C'mon kiddo. Let's see what we have in store." Joel started walking downhill, but soon realized Ellie wasn't following him. "Ellie." She was doing that thing he didn't like. That thing that looked like she was ignoring him. He raised his voice, "Ellie!"
She turned and looked at him, and seemed confused. "What?" She stared at Joel, and fidgeted with her hands.
Joel looked at her, realizing he hurt her more than intended. He wanted to tell her what happened, but he would just break down. He would break down in a way that no one could put him together again.
"Are you okay?" He said, having sadness to his voice.
"Why won't you just tell me what happened? What are you so afraid of?" This was the second time she took that approach on him, and the second time was worst than the first one.
It reminded him of when she brought up Sarah.
Sarah.
She was scared Joel would leave her, and he was too blind to see how much that would've hurt her. He didn't take her to the university for her, but for his own good.
"Ellie. Can we talk about this later?"
"No. I want to talk about it now."
"Ellie."
"Joel."
She glared at him, and she was starting to get flushed cheeks. He could tell her anger was rising.
"Ellie, can you please wait until we get there?"
She stood the closest to Joel she's ever been.
"Why won't you tell me?" She started to have tears in her eyes, and Joel didn't realize she was guilt-tripping him.
He sighed, and folded him arms over his chest. He was thumbing the bullet hole in his watch, and finally let himself say the truth.
"I lied."
