"Look, Destiny," Hayley started. "We, girls, are a unit. We share him. Whenever one of us gets to talk to him, we count that as a win for all of us."
Now, I understand. I didn't walk into a room full of groupies, I walked into a cult.
"Anyway, back to Drew," Charlie said clapping her hands. "Drew is a part of Justin's close circle of friends."
"Justin's friend group consists of Zay, Drew, Izzy, Orlan, and Chris. No one else has managed to get as close as they have." Ashley informed me.
"So, if you think you have a chance, stop." Angel added.
"Oh, uh, I'm not interested so you don't have to worry about that." I said nervously.
They were all quiet for a moment before Charlie whispered to Ashley. "Seriously, where the hell did you pick her up from?"
The temptation of shoving her into a body bag was slowly becoming a good idea. "How could you not be interested in Justin? Are you-"
"Would it matter if I was?" I snapped at Hayley. "And I'm just not interested in him, period."
"Alright, ladies, can we stop snapping at each others throats for a second? I've got some great news!" Ashley announced.
We turned to her and Ashley showed her phone to Angel. Her eyes darted across the screen and grinned. "We're totally going to be there."
Charlie and Hayley frowned at them. "What's going on?"
"Zay's throwing a party at Justin's place tomorrow and I just got an invite." Ashley said with a triumphant smile.
"Oh, Ashley, we have to go. Especially if it means Justin will be there! Not to mention, it's his place." Hayley exclaimed.
"Don't worry, girls. I just confirmed that we were going to be there." The girls squealed and I winced at the loud noise. I think I puked in my mouth a little bit.
"Are you coming?"
"I don't want t-"
"Of course, you have to. It's an absolutely must. Besides, you ever been to a party?" Ashley asked.
I hated that she always seemed to know where to hit. "No but-"
"Then we're going. It's settled. We have so much to do." The door suddenly opened and a woman that closely resembled Ashley peeked her head in.
"You girls hungry?" The girls nodded and began to walk out of the room.
Ashley stopped and raised an eyebrow at me. "You coming?"
"No, I'm fine. I already ate." I said.
Ashley nodded in understanding and she stood there in silence for a moment. "How about you go ahead and head home? They're heading home after this as well so you should get a headstart."
I opened my mouth to say something but decided to nod instead. She walked out of the room as I followed. I narrowed my eyes at the stupid shiny marble floor. Why did I even come here in the first place? All they do is fawn over popular boys.
I lifted my head and stared at the back of hers. Even if I managed to find myself being their...friend, I would never be like them. The very thought brought shivers down my spine.
I exhaled slowly as I exited the mansion-like place and I saw a familiar head hiding in the bushes. The gardener peeked his head over the field and then hid again when he saw that I was looking straight at him.
"Hey, you!" I called out.
There was a yelp and the sound of branches breaking including rustling leaves. I rolled my eyes and walked over. I extended my hand to the flailing gardener and they tensed up.
"Look, I can guess why you're scared of me but I'm not scary at all. I just want to help." I said softly.
Their eyes darted between my face and my hand before relaxing. They hesitantly put their hand in mine before I helped pull him up.
"...thank you." He said.
"No problem. Like I said, I just wanted to help. You don't need to be scared of me."
A guilty expression covered his face and I noticed a stray leaf in his brown hair. "Hold still for a moment."
His eyes widened in alarm and I gave him a side glance. He watched my hand carefully as I pulled the leaf out of his hair. "See?"
"...thank you." He said again.
"What's your name?" I asked curiously.
"Jack." He offered a small smile and I smiled back.
I held out my hand. "My name's Destiny. Nice to meet you."
He reached out to touch my hand and I shook it. He stared at our interlocked hands in awe before speaking. "My mom always told me that commoners were nothing but trouble. Especially..."
He glanced at me for a moment before dropping his eyes to the ground. "To think I actually believed her..."
"Well, now you know. 'Don't judge a book by its cover.'" I chirped and pulled my hand away.
"Yeah," He smiled. However, with one glance over at the mansion, the frown returned. "I should, um, get back to work."
"Yeah, you should. Sorry." I backed away and headed over to my car.
"I should be the one telling you that." The words trickled into my ears as the wind blew.
I smiled and got back in my car. By the time I got down the street, I slammed on my breaks and cursed.
We didn't even do the project.
