"The first sentence can't be written until the final sentence is written."
—Joyce Carol Oates, WD

Leah's POV✨

"Great job buttercup! I'm so proud of you! 6 weeks of pure sweat and a few tears and look finally you're done!" My mother said pinching my cheeks. I had just finished typing my very important short story. I had been complaining about it for weeks and I was finally done.

"It's not good enough, there's no way I'll get selected into Hunter! I'll just have a crappy job and horrible writing life! If I don't get in I'm never writing again!" I say taking my glasses off rubbing my eyes. I was incredibly tired and stressed out from writing this short story entry for my future college. "Is she threatening not to write again?" My father said walking into the kitchen laughing at me. I sat up turning to him quickly frowning.

"Dad! This is serious! I finished two weeks ago but every time I re-read and go over it I always find something wrong! I have to submit this by tomorrow night or it's over! HELP ME!" I say grabbing his arm yanking it. "You know I remember when our kitchen table used to be a place for eating and sometimes family game night." He said laughing looking at all my papers scattered everywhere on the kitchen table. I sighed screaming throwing my head back on my laptop.

"That's it you guys officially have a failure as a daughter. Aunt Donna was right Luke and Lisa will carry the family name." I say mumbling under my hair, my dad bends down to my ear whispering to me as my mom looks at us. "Leah Simone Ownes, you are great! Everything you write, everything you touch is golden. You are my golden child, no matter what you do in life I'll love you forever and always! If Hunter University doesn't accept you it'll be their loss!" My dad said I lifted my head slightly looking at him he smiles causing me to smile I hug him my mom laughing at us.

"And your grandmother says I'm your favorite! Hurry up Lee! The twins will be down soon for dinner! Clean up! We'll write again tomorrow morning!" My mother said shaking my hair again I nod saving my work and collecting my belongings off the kitchen table. I wasn't finished but it felt great knowing I had both of my parent's full support in whatever happened.

After dinner, I went to my room and Facetimed my best friend Nicole. Nicole was that one best friend that always had you laughing even if you weren't in the mood, she was a great friend and I loved her to pieces. "You already know Mia will freak out if she knows you aren't coming to her Halloween party! Come on Leah it's senior year! You went last year!" She said talking about me not going to our other best friend Mia's annual Halloween party. This year was different for me I was a senior this year and everything that was anything revolved around college. School was always important to me and since the winner of the Hunter's College novelist would be posted that night I wanted to be home to get the either good or bad news.

"I'll think about it, Hunter could post the winners either that day or a month after so we'll see," I say sitting on my bed watching her brush her hair, she looked at me. "How are my babies doing?" Cole said meaning the twins. I was 17 and a half years and when I was 6 years old my parents had twins my little sister Lisa and my little brother Luke. Fortunately, we all got along pretty well for them to be 11, I loved every moment of them and they pretty much adored me. "They are currently in their own rooms. Lisa is probably drawing her life away and Luke is probably reading as usual." I say laughing along with Cole. "Ah! My other family is a family of nerds!" She says laughing.

"Hey. Do you think we'll make it to New York?" I say feeling nervous about submitting my paper tomorrow night. I knew I could do better but my best wasn't clear to me, which caused me to have second thoughts. "Leah you're going to Hunter's don't stress about it. We'll live in our studio apartment together and you'll write away while I'll work in the fashion industry. It's all going to happen. Don't sweat it, kid!" She said smiling I smiled taking in her kind words.

"Just don't think about it too much! It's our senior year enjoy it. I'll see you tomorrow my love! Goodnight!" She said laughing I shook my head at her silliness."Goodnight Cole." I said ending the call, I sighed hearing a knock on my door. By the sound of the knock, I already knew who it was. "Come in Lizard!" I say getting off my bed seeing my little sister enter my room.

Lisa was 2 whole minutes younger than Luke, they were fraternal twins. Lisa was extremely shy and quiet, typical since Luke was that outgoing twin. Lisa was insecure about everything or anything that was hers. She thought I was perfect but truth be told I hated my appearance. I wasn't like most girls my age and I didn't like seeing myself sometimes. "Leah, can you please beg mom to straighten my hair! I'm begging you!" She said whining to me as I picked out an outfit for tomorrow. "Why do you want your hair straighten? Is it picture day?" I said looking at her, she sighed flopping on my bed.

"What's up Lizard? What's wrong?" I say stopping looking at her as she began to cry. I quickly went over to her hugging her. "Hey whoa what's going on?" I say looking at her wiping her tears away. "All the girls at school make fun of my curls! They say it's nappy and it looks dirty!" She confessed to me. I stopped touching her hair and thinking about what to say next.

"Follow me." I say walking to my bathroom across the room. Lisa slowly entered with her head down, I stand her upright and had her look into my mirror at herself. "You see that? Lisa, you're so stunning I wish you could see how you're freckles blend in with your skin color! I wish I had freckles! You have curly hair just like me and mom and there's absolutely nothing wrong with curly hair! Those girls are just jealous their hair can't hold a curl like ours can. Don't let them steal your light Lizard you're golden shine be beautiful they can't steal you from you! I won't let them!" I say smiling at her she smiled blushing. "You're one of a kind my love!" I say to her shaking her curls she hugs me running out the bathroom.

"What will we do when you leave us next year?" My mom says stepping inside my room. I turn to her smirking she hugs me. "Just yesterday I was  told I was expecting a baby girl and now you want to leave me." She says letting go of me I look at her. "Mom, I love you!" I say to her she smiles kissing my forehead. "I love you too buttercup! Goodnight."
