Stories, more often than not, have what's called a hook line. Much like in fishing, a hook line will grab the reader and pull them in, making them want more. If you have a good hook line, your story is more likely to be read.
For Example:
"She shivered as the icy air danced along her skin."
What did that line make you think? Did you want to read more? Often times people will write stories with a "boring" hook and the reader won't want to read the rest because they believe the rest of the story will be boring, but with a good hook, you can reel the reader in and keep them reading.
As many people may know, a 'Hook' or 'Impression statement' is a sentence, word or phrase you use to captivate the audience. If used correctly the audience will be at the edge of their seats, with their mouths watering for more.
