Roots

  • Dedicated to all the pressed flowers.

They tell me to let it go
It will do no good to keep
But they could never know
Just how the roots grow deep.

I could try to pull it out
But it just might take my heart
They'll never know what it's about.
I got the horse before the cart
But that's the farthest I go
This thing has got to keep
Why they don't have to know
The roots just grow too deep.

Tonight I'll try to get some sleep
I'll wrap the dark around my heart
To melt inside and to steep
My whole mind in night ne'er part.

I'll close my eyes and breathe the air
The window will be open far
Stars and I the view to share.
By moonlight I'll see the bar
Sand and shore, waves not sleep
Ever nearer to my heart
The climb is never steep
My mind no longer torn to part.

They told me to let it go
It did no good to keep
But they could never know
The roots just grew too deep.

I let you know it was no slip
A graceful leap did the trick
Not for me, trip or sip.
The grief kept me sick
When you said to let it go
How it was no good to keep
You just didn't know
The roots grew way too deep.
