Part 26 : No Strings Attached

Start from the beginning

I sat down, placing my head in my hands, raking my fingers through my hair, “She’s still in shock...”

I sat motionless for what seemed like hours, feeling completely numb. Our baby... was gone. I saw the blood on the sheets, heard her agonising screams of pain as she dipped in and out of consciousness...

Then the doctors had broken it to me. Her injuries were too...too...catastrophic for the baby to survive. Her body hadn't been able to cope. It was over.

“Come on...” Kain said, patting my shoulder, “It will help her if we’re all there for her.”

“That’s a good idea,” Juan said, “She’s going to need all the help she can get.”

I got up and we all quietly entered the room.

Kimberley was sitting upright now, slowly sipping her water, her hands were shaking, her green eyes now a dull grey, tears slowly spilling out of them..

They all hugged her individually, before taking seats around the room.

“It’s okay, “she croaked, “Life must go on. I mean... I was hardly pregnant was I?"

September clutched Kimberley’s left hand, “You’ll get through this Kim. With us. It’s going to be okay...”

Silence.

The door slowly creaked open, and there stood in the doorway, clutching a bunch of gas station flowers was... Ryan Drake.

The rage exploded in me like a lit firework gone awry. I couldn’t control myself. I was going to kill him, put a knife to his throat, watch him bleed to death, make him beg for my wife's forgiveness and then chop him up into the tiniest pieces, making him suffer... like Kimberley suffered... like we're suffering.

I leapt towards him grabbing the collar of his shirt, pressing him against the wall.

“Are you proud?” I shouted, “ARE YOU PROUD?"

Who the hell had let him in here? Let him anywhere near my wife?

He weakly smiled, “I’ve come to see Kimberley. I don't need this. I just need to see my darling Kimberley..."

He looked in her direction and smiled endearingly, almost as if he had done nothing at all, as if he hadn't ripped our child from our lives...

Kain pushed me out of the way, and landed a sharp right hook to Ryan's chin, watching him fly back against the door with a decisive thud.

"You have no right, you sick, twisted, r*pist b*stard! We know exactly what happened. That’s my sister! My sister, she’s lying in that hospital bed and you come in with your two dollar flowers and your smiles when you killed her baby!? You have no right...”

Juan agreed, shaking his head, “None. Asesinato would be too good for you, you pathetic piece of scum."

I placed my hand under his neck and grabbed his jaw. I wanted to rip it apart with my bare hands but instead I turned his face towards her. His eyes widened in shock and horror.

“Look at her!” I screamed, “LOOK AT HER! Look what you’ve done. Look! You’ve killed my child. You murderer! You MURDERER!”

He gulped, “I’m... I’m... sorry. I didn't know... I swear, Kimberley, I never want to hurt you. I could never hurt you Kimberley baby... I'm sorry."

“Sorry isn’t going to fix anything.” Kain bellowed, “Now, in what way would you like me to re-arrange your face?”

“You’re going to pay for this Drake. I swear it.” I hissed, "I'll make sure you rot in jail for the rest of your sorry little pathetic life, you piece of sh*t. You'll be on your knees, begging for forgiveness, but you'll never get it. Hell is too good for you, you b*stard."

“You’re just sick.” Kimberley screeched, her face twisting with her last ounce of strength, “You’re sick, you’re twisted, you’re disgusting.”

He frowned, “Kimberley-I....”

GET OUT. Get out, get out, get out! And I swear, if I see your face again, I will kill you, make no mistake, I will rip you apart with my bare hands. I’ve heard something that no mother should hear. My baby.....” she sobbed, “My baby is dead, because of you. I'm empty! I don't mean anything anymore! You've made sure of that! And now... my baby.... my baby..."

Her mother held her in her arms, rocking her slowly back and forth as she sobbed.

I ran to her side, putting my arm around her, kissing her forehead.

“Call the police..” Kevin said, after a long stint of silence, “Call the damn police before I lose my patience and kill this idiot myself.”

Drake was slumped on the floor while Kain held his collar, making sure he didn't move an inch.

Meanwhile, Kaitlin had run out of the room, only returning when she was accompanied by a tall man in a police officer's uniform, and the doctor on duty who'd looked after Kimberley when she'd first been brought in.

“It’s him! Ryan Drake!” Kassiana screeched, “He r*ped my sister. He killed her baby. It was him!”

He looked from me to Kimberley and around the room before looking at me once more.

I gave a subtle nod, "Officer, do as you see fit."

The officer pulled out his handcuffs and forcefully placed them on Drake’s wrists,

“Ryan Drake, you are under arrest, for suspicion of r*pe, you do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence in court. Anything you do say will be taken in as evidence....”
