Hours later the helicopters had presumably landed, or continued flying away off into the sunset, which honestly would have been great, if not for minutes later gunshots and heavy machine gun fire echoed through the streets.
"I don't like the sound of that." Alison said, looking out the window.
"Those guns have some serious fire rate. I feel like it's almost a little overkill." Daniel said, catching his knife in his hand and spinning it around on his finger.
Everyone quietly sat around, basically twiddling their thumbs. Hour by hour it sounded like the gunshots got closer and closer.
"We can probably see where they are from the roof can't we?" suggested Jenna.
"Yeah we probably could, funny you're suggesting the idea of going to the roof now, though." Daniel said, sitting up in his chair.
"We should make a quick run." Alison said, grabbing her rifle and sliding it over her shoulder.
"Okie dokie." Daniel said as he got up from his seat.
"Don't take as long as you did last time." Rowan asserted.
"Will do." Alison said as her and Daniel walked out the door and up the stairs.
When they reached the top, Alison drew her rifle and looked around the city through her scope. There was very little to see other than the rooftops of other buildings or roads that were absolutely covered in debris from, said fallen buildings. A good look from here really showed how much a mess the city was in, gone from a busy liveable place to a not so busy, and not so liveable place. Alison glanced down to the sea area to her left, to see soldiers dressed from head to toe in what looked like Jenna's power armor, little different but similar. They continued down the board, shooting anything that lunged at them. A couple blocks over, some screaming could be heard which would have been followed by another gunshot, silencing the scream. Were these people monsters? Were they defending their self? No one could really tell because them and that other person who just ate a bullet.
"You see this Daniel?" Alison asked as she looked around.
"See what?" Daniel asked.
"I swear one of them just shot someone." Alison said, taking another look at the scene that just went down.
A man, dressed in some ragged looking clothing had walked up to the soldiers with his hands up. It looked like he was saying something, then there was a red flash and the man fell motionless laying on the ground.
"This doesn't look too good." Alison said as she lowered her rifle.
"Nope. Not at all." Daniel said, just kinda looking around.
"Hey uh, is something bother you?" Alison turned to Daniel, asking.
"Other than all the usual stuff, nah." Daniel replied, slumping down on the rooftop.
"What's the usual stuff?" Alison asked.
"Ah, well. You see I'm paranoid." Daniel said, sliding his knife into his pocket and letting his arms rest however way they fell.
"Paranoid about what?" Alison pressed.
There was a pause, and then it finally clicked in her head.
"Right. I see why." she said as sat down next to him.
"Do you know how many close calls we had? Back in the vault when he had that gun, if that had been just one of us we'd be just another number to the body count. Back when me and Jenna checked out that parts place, some zombie got the jump on me and nearly took a nice big bite out of my neck, thankfully Jenna shot it but there was nothing else I could have done to save myself there. When we were chased down and we hid in that closet and by chance found some power armor, god how lucky were we? I'm not worried about us not sticking together, I know no one wants to do that. I'm just worried what's gonna happen when one of us get wiped off the earth." he said.
"You've really thought about this haven't you?" Alison asked.
"How could I not? It's been what mainly concerns me." he said.
There was a pause, and then he spoke again.
"Jenna is right that was a stupid idea, but we had to know what it was, you know?" he said.
"I know what you mean, it was pretty risky." Alison said.
There was another pause, and then Alison spoke again.
"Can I tell you something?" Alison asked.
"Of course, you've been telling me things since we met I don't know why it would ever be right to stop." he said.
"Almost everything you told me, I thought about last night. I didn't get any sleep last night because of it." she said, honest with a trying attempt to make him feel better.
"I've had nightmares for the past few nights, this is the first time in years I've had them." he said.
"Why didn't you talk about it?" Alison asked.
"I didn't want anyone worrying too much, stress causes teams to break down no matter the bond." Daniel replied.
There was a long pause between the two.
"We should go back down there now." Daniel said, getting up and offering a hand to his friend.
"Sure." she replied taking his hand and immediately being yanked up.
Eventually, they made it back down the stairs, and went back into the room and sat back down.
"So what's the scoop troop?" Jenna asked.
"Well, from what Ali saw I'm not liking the look of these guys, she tells me some guy got shot down in cold blood. And we heard screaming from a few blocks away." Daniel said, falling back into his seat.
"Few blocks away?" Rowan asked with a nervous tone to her voice.
"Sounded, right now we can't be sure of anything, though." Alison said, leaning against the wall.
"Uh, Daniel?" Jenna asked.
"Mhm?" he replied.
"So it seems like we can't get out of her by foot without being shot. You haven't done any work on the helicopter have you?" she asked.
"No, we will likely die if we leave out these front doors. No, I haven't done any work on it, but yes. That sounds like a good idea." he said, looking at his bag he left on the table.
"When's the best time to start?" Rowan asked.
"Sun's just about setting now. I just walked up and down many flights of stairs twice today, so I'd like to get some rest personally, but if someone wants to hold a light over my head I can work all night." he said.
"I don't trust your ability to do anything when you're tired, why do I have the feeling you'd fall asleep working on it like that one time on Skype. You need to get some sleep." Jenna asserted, pressuring him into sleeping.
"#TeamMom." Alison said with a happy tone to her voice.
"Well what If I don't wanna go to bed." Daniel jokingly said in a testing tone.
"Don't play this games with me Mister, I will take your knife." Jenna said with a serious tone.
"Oh I'm so scared, not my knife." Daniel mockingly said.
He was met with a glare that could make thousands of souls shatter in an instant under the pressure.
"Okay okay okay fine. I'll sleep and work on it tomorrow." he said, flopping down onto his sleeping bag.
"Good. Now let's all get some sleep." Jenna said as she laid down on the pullout couch.
One more night and things might start looking up.
