It's so hard to breathe. I sit up and open my eyes. I can hear the fire alarm going off. I see smoke all around me. I can't breathe. I try to stand but my body is weak. I start to cry.

"Hunter! Help me! Please!" I cry harder. I hear no response. I try to scream again but my voice is hoarse and I just end up getting a breath full of smoke. The tears won't stop. Suddenly, the door bursts open and I see a frantic Hunter. He looks around for a second and then he spots me. I start crying harder. He found me! He'll save us! In my eyes, Hunter is an angel. He runs over to me and scoops me into his arms. I wrap my arms around his neck and hold on tight as he bolts out of the room and is halfway down the stairs before I say

"Wait! Hunter, please! We can't leave Snowberry behind!" Snowberry is Hunter's old stuffed fox that he gave me. He sighs and runs back into my room and searches through my toy chest for the Snowberry. I hear the house shudder just as he finds him. I scream as he stumbles, losing his balance from the movement. He rights himself quickly and runs out into the hallway. He freezes almost immediately, though. I open my eyes and see the stair completely engulfed in the flames. I can feel him shaking and I hug him tighter. He turns around and runs back into my room and sets me down. He darts over to my toy chest again, picking it up. He turns towards the window and hurls the chest at it, shattering the glass. He runs over to me and takes my hand.

"It's all gonna be okay, got it? But I'm gonna need you to be brave Little Fox. Can you do that for me?" he says with a crooked grin. I nod shakily at him. His grin widens and he walks me over to the window. I can see the firetrucks just pulling up to the curb. He waves them over, frantically. They spot us and come running over. The firefighter seems to know what's about to happen, as he opens his arms.

"Okay, Little Fox. Moment of truth! On the count of 3, I need you to jump okay? Our friend down there is gonna catch you okay? Don't worry I'll be right behind you!" I look at him with wide eyes and he smiles warmly at me. I take a deep breath and stand on the ledge.

"One." I look shakily down at the firefighter.

"Two." I take one more deep breath, clutching Snowberry to my chest.

"Three!" I jump off without hesitation. I scream as I plummet down, down, down. He catches me with ease and runs back a little, setting me down a safe distance away. He turns back around and starts running back to catch Hunter. Everything that happens next seems to happen in slow motion. He's almost back below the window when I hear a loud groan. I widen my eyes in horror as the building explodes and crumbles right before my eyes. I watch as Hunter's figure disappears and I can hear his scream.

"Hunter!" I scream as his voice gets cut off abruptly. I scream even louder.

"Hunter no! Please get back up! You have to! Please!" Firefighters run over to me and start to pull me back, away from the fire, away from my home, away from my brother. "...zel! Hazel!! Hazel wake up!! Hazel Darwin for Pete's sake, wake up!" My eyes snap open and I can hear a girl screaming. It takes me a moment to realize it's me. I snap my mouth shut quickly. My foster mom sits on the side of my bed with a furious look on her face.

Hey guys! I hope you're enjoying the story so far! I'm gonna try to update at least once a week because I know how much cliffhangers suck! I'm sorry if the formatting stinks! It's my first time writing on Wattpad. Anyways hope you enjoyed this chapter!
