The Heir

"Maki, come here." Xavier called to me one afternoon.

"Coming!" I called as I made my way over. When I reached Xavier I asked, "What's up?"

Xavier sighed. "I have put off a very important matter until today, and now I must make a very important decision."

"What decision?" I asked, still baffled.

Xavier looked at me. "Where are the pups?"

"They are out hunting with Dalila." I answered.

"Good." he said. "This will make the matter easier. Maki, the pups are almost teenagers now, and the time has come for me to pick one of our sons as my heir for when I die. I will teach him everything about leading the pack, but I can only choose one."

I sighed unhappily. Now I understand why Xavier has been so stressed lately. "Well, who will you choose?"

"That's it, I don't know." Xavier stated. "Blake is the better fighter, but Tyler excels at hunting."

"It's your choice." I said, sitting down. "Whatever you decide, I will try to support you the best I can."

Xavier looked at me gratefully. "Thanks, love. I'll announce who my heir is at dinner."

"Okay." I said, as he walked away. "I hope he chooses wisely."
