During the Civil War a young lady by the name of Holly Smith lived on a melon plantation in South Carolina. Her father, brothers, cousins, uncles, and grandfathers were all fighting in the war.

Holly Smith wanted to help out Jefferson Davis and the Confederacy. So, she packed her bags and went to the front lines. Not fighting, but passing out melons to the soldiers whilst in battle.

This act earned her the name Melon Holly among the soldiers. One day, an explosive cannonball blew up a regiment of Confederate soldiers. Unfortunately, Melon Holly was also killed in the blast. One surviving member, an illiterate farmboy, remembered her always as Melan Choly.
