Merida's P.O.V.

The next day, I was out riding Angus. I was shooting at my many targets. But I couldn't get my mind off the boy.

What was he doing here? How had he gotten here? What happened to him?

He had brown hair. I know that for sure. He had some freckles. He looked cute, in a way. MERIDA! What are you thinking? You can't think that. No marriage. Freedom.

A crush can't hurt, right? Yeah. Just a crush.

Is he okay? Will he be okay? Maybe I should go back. I turned Angus around.

I rode him to the stables and jumped off. I walked into the castle, dodging everyone with turns and twists and jumps. I took the steps two at a time. I could practically feel my mum looking on disapprovingly.

When I got to the top, I stopped to catch my breath. Then I walked to the end of the hall and turned left. Down one, two, three, four doors. I stopped in front of the fifth door on the right. The guest room.

My hand reached out as the door opened. There was my mum.

"Oh good. you're here. This is Camran. He is a healer down in the village that I asked to come here," Mum explained.

"Nice to meet you," I said. "Is he okay?"

"He will be. The cuts were minor and his eye will heal. His leg, however, had to be taken off. It was too infected," Carman said.

It felt like the breath had caught in my chest. Taken off?

"How will he walk?" I asked.

"I was able to connect a piece of wood that will work. Much like your father's leg."

"Oh." Now I felt dumb. My dad had lost his leg and he could still walk.

"Thank you Carman. Is there anything else?" Mum asked.

"No. Please contact me if he gets worse," Carman said, walking out the door.

I watched him go. Then I walked over to the boys bed. I wish I knew his name. His eye wasn't as swollen anymore. His cuts were bandaged. He had so many that it covered much of his face.

"Merida," Mum sighed, her voice indicating that she was about to give a speech.

"Yes?"

"You shouldn't linger. Imagine how he will feel if he finds a woman hovering over him. Especially one that threatened to shoot him."

"What, should we have Dad up here? That won't freak him out. Or maybe leave him alone and have him wake up with no one here. That won't freak him out either," I said, voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Merida..." Mum sighed, " You know what? If you're this concerned about him, you can stay." She turned on her heel and walked out, carefully shutting the door behind her.

I turned back to the boy. His eyes were still closed. I knew it might be a while before he wakes up. I went to my room and grabbed a hunk of wood, a whittling knife, a book with blank pages, and a pencil.

I dashed back, pulled up a chair, and pulled out the book and pencil. I wasn't the best drawer, but I was decent. I began to sketch his face. I tried to remember it without the bandages. All I had to do was not draw the cuts and...

I stayed like this until dinner. I had my dinner brought up, not wanting to be gone when he woke up. The sun left as the moon appeared. I didn't leave.

I don't remember falling asleep. I guess I had because I opened my eyes to the rising sun. It was beautiful.

Then, I heard a moan.
