6. Pick-up Lines

He was so terrible at flirting. He would mess up his supposed-to-be funny lines and they would sound so freaking cheesy that she couldn't help but laugh. And he knew it; he knew how horrible his flirtatious lines sounded, so he would just laugh along and pretended that he didn't notice she was blushing.

Late July, 2010

I held the phone against my right ear and suppressed a giggle. "Grant, you idiot. Stop it."

"Nooo," he drawled over the phone. "I shall not stop. Wait, I've got more here."

I groaned. "For the love of God, Preston, you're crazy. Stop the nonsense, you're driving me insane."

He either didn't hear me or just simply ignored me. I heard him click his mouse and I could bet that he was staring intently at his computer while grinning goofily. I smiled at the thought. Ah, how I wish I could see his face right now...

                "Duuude," I called out.

"Wait for it, Hoult. Just you wait." More clicking.

                "I'm hanging up now."

"No! Wait! Hold on! This one's brilliant," he exclaimed excitedly and I sighed. "You may fall from the sky, you may fall from a tree..." he trailed off.

                "Yes, and then..."

"But, the best way to fall... is in love with me," he finished, his voice in a low, dramatic whisper. "Heard that? That was a good one. Just admit it, admit it!"

I laughed and couldn't help but feel a little bit flattered. Yes, that one was a bit better than the previous pick-up lines he had told me. "God, Grant. That was cute but cheesy."

"You so liked that," he insisted. "I've got more..."

                 "Grant, I swear to God—"

"Are you an interior decorator? Say yes."

                "No, I'm not."

                "Say yes!"

"Argh! Yes, I am! Now what?"

I could see his grin as I closed my eyes. "'Cause when I saw you, the room became beautiful."

I literally face-palmed myself. "Oh my God."

He continued. "Can I have directions?"

I sighed, rubbing my temples and trying to contain my giggles despite the annoyance I was feeling. "To where, Preston?"

"To your heart."

"... That was unbelievably cheesy."

He laughed. "I know! Anyway, Ali, Do you have a map? 'Cause I'm getting lost in your eyes."

"You're not even looking into my eyes right now, Preston."

"I know. And right now I'm wishing that I am."

He said it in a simple, matter-of-fact tone that I started to blush like crazy. "Go to sleep, Grant. You're losing your mind."

"Yeah, because I've been thinking about you all day."

That did nothing to erase the redness on my cheeks. "Seriously, man! I think I've had enough of your cheesy lines to last a lifetime!"

"Nuh-uh, Ali. Oh, wait. You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams."

I started to whine, "Please Grant, just go to sleep..."

"Okay! Okay!" His laugh rang out and I couldn't help but smile, wishing that I could hear it not by the phone, wishing he was right here rather than miles away. Summer break sucked, and here I was stuck in my room while he was visiting his family somewhere in Florida. "I'll go to sleep now."

                "Finally! Bye!"

"I'll miss your voice too, Ali," he drawled sarcastically. "Good night, Princess."

I grinned, though he wouldn't see it. "Have a nice dream, Grant."

"Of course I will. I'll be dreaming about you."

                "Argh! Quit it!"

Once again, he laughed. "Alright, alright! Talk to you later."

I hung up the phone and lied on my bed. I looked at the phone and laughed as I set it down on my nightstand. God, Grant was crazy and I was crazy about him.

                "I think I'm going insane."

I fell asleep thinking about him, and it brought me to a dream where he was mine and I was his. And boy, was it a nice dream I had that night.
