Third Person's POV

"See?" Chat lulled, blood dripping out of his mouth. He staggered as he glanced behind at Ladybug. "I told you I'd protect you."

Ladybug sat on the rail of the big cruise ship, staring at the water. "We do this as a team,"  she whispered to herself. "So how could I..."  The waves churned and bubbled with foam. "...have lost him?"

She saw something bubbled forth from the depths of the ocean, and she sucked in her breath. Was it Chat? When the object bobbed up, glinting silver in the light, Ladybug sucked in an agonizing breath. It was Chat's baton. "I never saw him come back up," she whispered to herself, fear shaking her words. The baton slowly sank back into the waves, and Ladybug cracked. "CHAT!" she screamed, jumping into the waves.

Minutes ticked by as the super-duo stayed submerged in the frothy sea. Then, in a spout of water, Ladybug burst forth from  the waves, the unconscious Chat in her arms. She gasped, sucking in all the air she could get, and tugged the unconscious cat to the sandy shore.

She laid him down on the sand, checking for signs of life. "Chat?" she asked softly. "Chat!" Chat remained still, unmoving, not responding to his partner. "Chat Noir," Ladybug growled, fear creeping into her voice. "You better not be pretending!" She cupped his face with her hands, cold tears welling up in her eyes. "Because its not funny!"

Water slowly dripped out of his mouth, sliding down his cheek. Ladybug breathed heavily and laid her head on his chest, checking for a heartbeat. "Wake up!" she cried, her voice small and scared. She lifted her head from his chest and stared down at his face, her eyes captivated on his sleep-like expression. Ladybug panicked, fear catching in her throat, and she pressed her lips to Chat's, breathing air back into his body.

She panicked further when he didn't respond, but she calmed herself down and started to perform CPR. She let out small grunts as she pressed all of her weight down on Chat's chest, praying he would wake up. She felt emotions well up inside of her as she remembered the fight, still pushing down in his chest.

"Je t'aime,  Ladybug," Chat whispered softly, giving Ladybug a loving smile, his soft green eyes raptured on her face.  "Chat..." Ladybug started slowly, sadness in her eyes. "I can't return your feelings. I'm in love with someone else."

Ladybug pressed down harder, emotions fueling her body. She needed to save Chat. She started to cry softly as she looked down at his lifeless face. His eyes were closed.

"I... I understand, M'Lady..." Chat said, voice laced with disappointment and sadness. "However, my feelings will always remain the same."

Ladybug hiccupped and pressed her lips down on Chat's mouth again, forcing air into his lungs. He still wasn't responding, and she was growing more panic-stricken by the minute.

"Because no matter what happens..." he said softly, body going tense. The akumatized villain appeared, his face outlined with the signature sign of Hawkmoth. Ladybug shrieked in surprise; how had the villain snuck up on them like that?

"I will always protect you, Chat finished. He shoved Ladybug out of the way as the villain shot a deadly blast, and Chat took the hit. He grunted in pain as he was hit, and then he staggered off the deck of the cruise ship, and toppled into the waves.

Ladybug resumed the motion of pressing down on Chat Noir's chest, desperate for him to come back. Her crying became louder as she realized how dire her situation was. Chat was still unmoving, no signs of life evident in him.

She remembered the sly and flirtatious smile she had grown to love in her silly partner, the smile comforting. She remembered the splash of water as Chat had fallen in, swallowed up by the unforgiving currents of the cold ocean. She looked down at his face again, crying softly as Chat Noir faded slowly into death. She didn't want to lose him. No, she wasn't going to let anyone take him away.

"Stupid cat," she choked, looking at his unresponsive form. Tears started to spill forth from her foggy blue eyes, her raven hair shifting in the sea breeze. "Wake up!" Her hands relaxed on his chest as she started to spiral into despair, thinking that maybe he was actually... gone. "You can't just tell someone you love them, and then go and die!" she ranted, her frame hunched. "And get on my nerves with your dumb flirts? Who's going to tell me your lame cat puns?"  she cried softly.

She cupped Chat's face again, her tears dripping onto his cheeks. "Please,"  she whispered to no one, anyone, brushing a lock of golden hair away from his face. "Just open your eyes... That's all I ask.." She choked down sobs, tears streaming down her face. And then the emotions she bottled up popped open.

"CHAT!" she yelled at him, her vision clouded with anger. "That's it! I've had it! You hear me?!" She did mouth-to-mouth again, sobbing into his lips. "Please,"  she whispered, her rage fading. She reeled back ins surprise when a strangled gurgle sounded in Chat's throat, his mouth bursting with water. He leaned over, facing the sandy beach, and hacked up water. He was choking on salty water, forcing the stuff out of his lungs. "Chat!" Ladybug exclaimed in surprise and alarm.

He sat back up, and stared at her with incomprehension on his face. His hair was mangy and wet, screwed up around his face as he gave his Lady a questioning look. "Stupid cat," Ladybug breathed, emotion crackling in her voice. Chat Noir coughed again, wiping his mouth with his leathered hands, claws sharp and gleaming.

Ladybug scooted closer to him, and gripped his wet hair. "Your hair's a mess,"  she choked, Chat stiffening at her touch. Ladybug got to her knees and wrapped her arms around Chat's head, pushing him into her chest. Chat sat there, stiff of surprise at Ladybug's actions. Tears streamed silently down her face as she hiccupped quietly. "Stupid, stupid cat,"  she whispered softly.

"M'Lady?" Chat questioned, still not aware of what was happening. Ladybug nestled her face into the top of Chat's head, burying her nose in his golden hair. "Don't you ever do that again,"  she cried, her voice muffled. Chat's cheeks grew warm as he realized the closeness between them, and his eyes grew wide at his Lady's words.

A gloved hand came up to Ladybug's face and gently wiped away her tears, her sad gaze locked on the black cat ears upon Chat's head. She closed her eyes slowly, letting the feeling of Chat's presence sink in. She sobbed again, choking on air as emotions spilled. Suddenly her face was brought down to mirror Chat's and she hiccupped. "Please don't cry, M'Lady," Chat lulled, wiping away more of Ladybug's tears. Her eyes were foggier than usual, tinged with sadness. Chat's green gaze focused on her sad eyes, raptured by her beauty.

Their faces were only inches apart, noses brushing against each other. Just as Chat Noir moved in for a soft kiss, a small hand placed itself on his lips, and Ladybug's earrings beeped. One more minute left. Ladybug got to her feet and gave Chat one last fleeting glance. "Never scare me like that again," she ordered, before zipping away.

Chat watched her go, confusion swimming in his mind. What had happened just there? Did she like him? Was she just a concerned friend?

Ladybug was asking herself the same question. She didn't like him, did she? She was just in despair of losing her partner, right? She didn't even know him that personally, but she felt like crying forever when she thought she had lost him.

Did she love him?

The thing was, neither of them knew.
