Before Islam was introduced in the seventh century, Arabic letters lacked dots. Ancient Arabs were able to differentiate between letters like:
س، ش
ج، ح، خ
ص، ض
ع، غ
ب، ت، ث
ط، ظ
ر، ز
These are just examples, as there are more Arabic letters that are similar to each other and only different through the dotting. They had the ability to "naturally" know which letter is which just by looking at them (submitted by TheNilesDaughter).
