Chapter 2  Man...werewolf? Is that possible?

She looked at him, confused by the riot of emotions he was causing within her.

She regained her composure and softly said, "My name is Jem. Jem Holloway. What's your name?"

"Case Remington. Would you allow me to walk you home?"

Jem didn't know why she said yes, even as she said it. She didn't hang around boys- she avoided them like the plague. She never wanted to be a whore like her mother; had never wanted to risk angering her father. But her father was dead now, she was on her own and 18, and she felt a pull towards this man that she had never felt before.

She decided to, for once in her life, take a chance. So she smiled sweetly up at him and said, "Yes. I would like that."

Case walked alongside her, positioning himself towards the street and staying alert to danger. He felt the overwhelming need to protect Jem.

Such a fitting name, as that was what she was to him.

My mate. My Jem. At last.

He would love to protect her with his life. He had been beginning to fear that he would never meet the girl that would turn his life upside down, drive him crazy with love, and now that he had... I have to make her mine. have to make her fall in love with me.

Which he didn't know how to accomplish. Ironic, how he was the big bad werewolf, leader and alpha of his pack, and he was left dumbfounded by a sweet, innocent girl of around the age of 18, he guessed.

He wanted to know more about her, needed to learn more.

He asked her, "What are you doing out at 10 pm on a school night?"  fishing for information.

She softly said, " I have a job at Rose's Cafe as a waitress. I just got off and was heading home when....you know...I was lost in my thoughts and wasn't paying attention....Thank you. For saving me."

He growled, angered, and gruffly said, "It is my job to take care of you, to protect you. Never thank me for that. You hear me, precious Jem?"

She looked up at him, confused by his words, just as they reached her apartment door. He realized then that he had said to much, confused her, that she had no way of knowing why her comment would upset him.

She looked up at him through her lashes and said, "What?"

He sighed and said, "If you let me come in, I can explain."

She almost said no reflexively, would have said no to any other man. But she hesitated...somehow she know that she could trust Case.

That as scared as she was, it would be a mistake to not let him into her apartment and into her life.

Case correctly interpreted the expressions running across her face, and he gave her a relieved smile when she said, "Yes."

She unlocked the door and walked in, him coming behind her. She babbled, "It's not much, but it's enough. I'm on my own and it's what I can afford, with balancing work and my senior year of highschool. "

He looked around at her clean apartment, consisting of a kitchen, table, chairs, a couch and a recliner, a television, and a hallway leading back to what he assumed was a bathroom and her bedroom...he stopped his thoughts there, choosing to focus them in a different direction.

"Why are you on your own?"

She hesitated, unsure of what to say. She never opened up to anyone. So why did she have the urge to spill all of her secrets to this man that she knew nothing about?

Except you do know that he is sweet...and gorgeous.....and mysterious....and saved my life....and makes me feel sexy, loved, and protected somehow....

He was all of these things, even if some of the things he said had confused her.

She softly sat down on the couch and he sat down beside her.
