TW: Abuse and all that

. . .

Winnie tapped on her desk as her teacher began the lesson. The six-year-old was bored and sleepy.

"Now, class, is it ever right to hit someone?" Mrs. Bell began.

"No!" A student said. Winnie's ears practically perked up.

"B-but what if you're just asserting yourself? What if it's an accident?" She was getting slightly worked up now.

"That's not how you assert yourself but it's okay if it's an accident but if it happens a lot, it may not be an accident."

"B-b-but you can still love someone if you hit them."

"No, if you hit someone and you were thinking about it, you don't like them."

"B-b-b-but-"

"Winnie, is there something you'd like to tell me?"

"N-no." Winnie kept her head down for the rest of the day.

. . .

"Pa?" Winnie asked her father on the way home. The two reached the door before Josh responded.

"What is it?"

"M-mrs. Bell said if you hit someone a lot then you don't love them. Does that mean that-" The six-year-old was cut off by a smack across the face causing tears to well up in her eyes.

"Don't you ever say something like that again!"

"Josh!" Dan said. "Don't speak to her like that!"

The young girl was shoved into a wall as her fathers started to shout. Josh aimed several hits to Dan. Winnie turned and ran as far as she could.

"Winnie!" Dan called out but the young girl continued to run and his shouts grew silent.

It was dark now and Winnie was completely lost. She usually never went far without Dan by her side. She sat down on the sidewalk and began to cry.

"Um," she heard a masculine voice say, "Miss, are you okay?"

Winnie looked up and her green eyes were met with a pair of light blue ones. The man in front of her had black hair similar to her father's which made her smile but she was still crying.

"I'm lost!" She wailed.

"Well, I live around here. Do you know your address? I might be able to take you home." Winnie opened her arms and the man scooped her up. She quickly told him her address and he started to walk in the direction that she had come. "My name's Phil. Did you run off?"

"Y-yes. My name's Winnie."

"Why?"

"My daddies were fighting again an-and Mrs. Bell said that if someone hits someone else a lot it means that they don't love them so I asked Pa if that mean that he didn't love Daddy or me and he hit me and said that I wasn't allowed to say that again and Daddy got made at Pa for hittin' me." (AN: Oops, I just accedently gave her an American southern accent. Well, now she sounds like me)

"Who's Mrs. Bell?"

"My teacher."

"Well, Winnie, I may need some help. Do you like your Pa?"
