Regulus doesn't want Lily to hate him.

Actually, to be perfectly honest, he wants her to love him. Why? He still didn't know. Does he love her? Possibly. Probably.

But he can't. There's a mark on his arm, writhing and burning, that reminds him everyday—every second—that he's unworthy of her care. She'd never understand.

She'd never understand!

It's his duty. It's his legacy. It's his price for being a coward.

Not a coward. Not a coward.

Lily smiles at him every time she sees him and pretends that she didn't just cry all over him. She waves and beams and laughs and flicks her beautiful red hair and—and—and

He cares. Too much.

She starts to cozy up to Potter. It seems like that ungrateful bastard took her vulnerability and used it to his advantage—getting Lily to care for that good-for-nothing prankster.

Maybe she deserves him.

His thoughts take dangerous turns these days. He has time to think. To review what his parents taught him.

Is blood really that important? To go as far as to murder one because of it? Isn't blood all red? He's seen Lily bleed that one time she fell and scraped her knee just enough for there to be blood.

But he has to tell her. She'll hate him, but maybe it's a good thing. She won't die, she won't be used against him.

One less liability.

One more heartbreak.
