Chapter 1

She would be damned to ever fall in love again. Even if everything about college was new to her, she was sure that love wouldn't play a big part.

Everything about today spoke of unease.

The sun was blinding Addie as she drove the length of the street to reach her new apartment. She would begin college in two days and had just driven to the campus today to get her apartment ready before classes were to begin.

Her mom and dad had chosen the apartment, their love for all things Victorian and sturdy-looking evident as she parked outside of the maroon six-story building. She had trusted them, of course. She knew they would choose something classy and with enough security for an 18 year old girl living alone, but not at all stuck-up looking, and as far as she could see, she was right.

She was relieved to find that the apartment was some-what furnished when she opened the door. Although her family was rather well-off, they took in the value of every dollar they earned.

She was greeted by a wooden table with a framed mirror hung over it in the foyer. Walking forwards, she saw a soft beige love-seat and two singles surrounding a glass coffee table in front of a television in the living room. Exploring the kitchen, she noted a stove, percolator, and coffee-maker in the with a small glass table with leather-bound legs and matching black leather chairs to serve as a dining table.

Finally setting down the suitcases she had carried in the bedroom, she sat on the mattress of the queen-sized bed across from a mirrored vanity next to a dark wooden desk in the corner.

The vanity made her take a double take. She could still feel the pain of the sharp corners on her scalp and the unwelcomed warmth that came with the gushing of blood afterwards.

"I guess this is home for now", she whispered to herself as she let herself fall back on to the mattress.

She subconsciously rubbed the scar on the right side of her forehead. This would be a big change after all.

Driving to the college to pick up her schedule for the semester, she thought about the past year.

Her father and mother were skeptical about her living all on her own instead of taking up residence in one of the college dormitories like most of the students would be. But they knew that she would probably be more comfortable if she didn't have to deal with being surrounded by so many new people after the past year.

About two years ago she had met her first boyfriend, Nate, who at the time had seemed to be her soul mate. She met him at one of the beginning of the year soirees, he was a senior, and they had hit it off great. He was charismatic and smart, athletic but not the usual jock. She was the witty, piano playing debater. They were bound to be golden, a few of her friends had gushed at the mere mention of them being together. A few months later, they were a couple when things went for a nasty turn.

One day, while Addie was hanging with her friends at the town coffee shop, she saw Nate pass by hand in hand with another girl. Being the outspoken girl that she was, she promptly confronted Nate. Instead of confessing his infidelity, he was enraged that she would even think that. Out of his rage, he had pushed Addie, slamming her into a wall hard enough for her to lose consciousness.

When she woke up and recalled what had happened a few hours later, she was shocked to find Nate at her side, apologizing and holding a cold-compress to the bump that had formed on her head. He promised her it would never happen again.
