Sonnet No. I

Sacrifice

©2010, Olan L. Smith

It gave to us intelligence and vim,

Enough to be much more than tissue's lore,

So deftly centers Loving Care and Hymn,

Apart from life's charade, of so much more

Than that of evolutions' banal soup

Confusion. For I do believe a Fount

As giving us our life and forms our group

With strength anew, and It apart, does count.

We stand beneath this tree, to scan across

A living work remaining unsurveyed,

And do not comprehend uncommon loss

Of Virtue's sacrifice in trade conveyed.

For we in sinfulness do still partake,

And thus, a sacrifice for human sake.
