"Once you're labelled as mentally ill, and that's in your medical notes, then anything you say can be discounted as an artefact of your mental illness." - Hilary Mantel.

I walked through the double doors, shutting it and making sure it stayed shut before walking past an empty reception desk. I dropped a tuna mayo sandwich in a ziplock bag on the desk for Ruby, the receptionist and carried on. I made my way to the locker rooms where I dumped my bag, keys, and phone. Just before I shut the door, my phone started to ring. "Hello?" I answered without checking the caller ID. "Hey, Delilah," Tommy, a worker, chirped. "When are you in?" I chuckled a little. "Now actually. I'm coming up now."

"Oh. Okay. See you in a sec then!" I hung up, threw the phone on top of my bag and locked the locker back up.

Upstairs was loud. I could hear it before I even went halfway up the stairs. I heard laughter. I smiled to myself as I rushed up the rest of the stairs and into the main lounge. Jason, a schizophrenic, was laughing at Tommy, who was telling him a story using grand hand gestures. "Good morning, gentlemen," I grinned, sitting beside Jason. "Del, Jason was just telling me about his trip to London." I smiled. "That's real nice, Jase, but that's Tommy, remember?" Like many other patients, Jason was delusional. He scrunched his eyebrows up and nodded. "Right, sorry." I patted his back and got up to see my rotor that was pinned in the office. "Morning guys," I smiled to the nurses. I was greeted with a series of good mornings.

"Where's my rotor?" I asked Susie, a perky ginger. She came up beside me. "Didn't you get the call this morning?" I shook my head. "Well, I DID call your house phone, but you didn't answer. You've got a new patient. Reena was discharged." My face dropped. "Reena? I didn't even get to say goodbye." Reena was a 17-year-old boy from Poland, sent here because he went AWOL and tried to stab a teacher with a compass. We worked together for two months. "Don't worry. He'll be back tomorrow for therapy with you." I grinned at that. We had the best therapy sessions. I brought cake for him (even if I wasn't supposed to) and he would bring me little poems that he wrote. "Who's the new patient?" I asked, turning away from the board. Susie walked towards her desk and rummaged through a tower of papers before pulling out a file and giving it to me. "Luke.... Burkes? No, Brooks."

I read through his file, taking a seat on a spare chair.

Name: Luke Anthony Mark Brooks

Age: 20

DOB: May 3rd, 1995

Reason for admission: Extremely suicidal, some self-injury known, depression. Has shown evidence of sociopathic behaviour.

Side notes: Luke has attempted suicide a known total of 4 times. Overdose on three occasions and an attempt to slit his wrist on another. He can be violent and angry, due to mood swings that have been put down to the depression. Luke carries a sketchbook around with him. DO NOT try to take it off of him. He doesn't let anyone touch it.

"He'll be here any minute now, so go wait downstairs," Susie said, interrupting my reading. I put the file down and stood. "Can you get me a copy of Lukes file please?" I asked her sweetly. She nodded and picked the file back up to do it.

I passed Tommy and Jase again, who were both in deep concentration as they played go fish. I bent down to Jason and whispered '5' in his ear before jogging off. "Dammit!" I heard Tommy say. I laughed and locked the lounge door behind me. I could hear a murmur of conversation downstairs, making me panic that I was late. I took the stairs two at a time until I was greeted by the brightness of the reception. Sitting in the uncomfortable chairs was a porter, a guy and Ruby. Ruby was blabbering about how nice the hospital and how 'Delilah is one of the best people to be a patient for'. I walked forwards and the guy -who was obviously Luke- looked up. I smiled. "Hey."
