The date was July 1, 2020, and Alexander Futran was bored.

It was a sunny day with only a few clouds in the sky. It was sort of moderate in terms of temperature, about 71 degrees Fahrenheit or so. It was a nice day. But Alexander Futran, who was just sitting on his couch, was still bored.

He had no schoolwork to complete (it was summer vacation), no chores to do (did them already), no video games to play (he had beaten them all), and he didn’t feel like going outside (he was an “inside person”). Alexander Futran, Xan to his friends, was figuratively the most bored person in the history of forever.

He didn’t even feel like calling his friend, Alan Venus, who was probably at the beach or something anyway, on the phone. Alan, unlike Xan, was an outdoor person, and a self-proclaimed “athlete.” Whatever that meant. At the moment, it probably meant that he was playing volleyball with the other “beach dudes,” as Xan liked to call them in his mind.

So, yeah, Xan was bored.

And then the phone rang.
