Chapter Nine

"What are you doing here, Claire?" Ethan asked me once he opened the door.

"We have to talk."

"Just get inside before someone sees you."

Ethan led me into his house and sat down on the living room couch.

"Why are you avoiding me?"

"I can't answer that."

"And why not Ethan."

"I'm protecting you. Leave it at that."

"How are you protecting me? I have walked around school by myself, been in a car accident, and watched you betray me. Is that how you protect someone?"

"I haven't betrayed you."

"You have been hanging around Jack. How is that not betraying me?"

"Claire, I'm trying to help you but I just can't be seen with you."

"You know what Ethan? I thought you were my friend. I guess I was wrong."

I stood up and began walking out of the house.

"Claire please. Don't give up on me."

"Too late."

And that was the moment I walked out of Ethan Smith's life.

===========================

School ended last week. My parents were amazed. They came back from their trip with the surprise of me receiving my first A on a report cart since elementary school. What was even more surprising was that they were all A's. No matter how much I wanted to dislike Ethan, he really was a great tutor.

I haven't seen Ethan since I walked out of his house last week. My parents have a huge business party and they want me to attend. I told them I wasn't feeling well and they decided to go without me.

The possibility of seeing Ethan at the party was too high.

It's been two weeks since my accident. Two long weeks with my new friend- this stupid cast on my right arm. My doctor said I could get it removed in four weeks. That time couldn't come soon enough.

Sweat pants were made for the purpose of working out. However, a large portion of those who wear sweat pants use them for the same purpose as me- lounge wear. Once my parents left for their business party I put on my favorite baggy sweats and got into bed.

From: Kris
To: Claire

Hey! Come let me in!

I got up from my bed and walked downstairs. Why is Kris here? She should be at home!

"Surprise!" Kris screamed in my ear.

"Uh. Hey?"

"Guess who is moving back?! Me!"

"What! No way!"

"Kris and Claire attacking senior year. I can't wait!"

*FOUR WEEKS LATER*

"Remember to hold still."

That was the only words I remembered this morning as the doctor cut off the cast from my arm. I'm very glad it's off. It's been getting annoying. You won't believe how much you use your arm until you can't.

Kris and I have hung out everyday and it's been great. I haven't seen or spoke with Ethan but his aunt asks my mother about me every time she sees her.

Tonight is a huge business party. Honestly, it's the biggest and first one of the new year. Christmas and New Years were spent with family (unless you're my parents and took a trip to the Bahamas). My mother sees no reason to why I can't go. AKA you're going and that's final.

So here I am. Wearing a red dress walking into a party I don't want to be at.

===============================

"Claire! Its so good to see you. You look beautiful and that awful cast is gone!" Sherry said hugging me tightly.

"I got it removed this morning. It was very excited." I smiled, the first genuine smile I have smiled in a long time, at her.

"Sweetie, you have to try the little finger sandwiches. They are to die for."

"I will. Thanks Sherry."

She smiled at me before walking off. I've been in this party for 30 minutes and she was the first person to approach me. My parents left me the minute we walked through the entry doors.

I decided to do as Sherry said and try the finger sandwiches. I grabbed a napkin, placed one on it, walked over to a table, and sat down. She was right. These were pretty good.

I placed my elbow on the table, rested my chin on my hand, and closed my eyes. Th music is too loud, there is too many people, and I want to go home. I heard someone sit in the chair beside me. I looked up and there was none other than Ethan Smith. I glared at him before I went to stand up.

"Claire, please here me out."

"I haven't heard from you in over a month. I tried to talk to you a long time ago and now you want to talk?"

"I can explain."

"Yeah, last time I heard that I just found out my boyfriend at the time cheated on me with the schools queen bee."

"Claire, I'm nothing like Jack."

"You two sure we're becoming buddy buddy."

By this time I had already started walking towards the exit with Ethan in tow.

"Let me explain and it will all make sense."

"Ethan I can't."

"Yes you can. Come on Claire."

"You have five minutes. And that's me being generous."

He smiled slightly, grabbed my hand, and lead me over to his car.

"Ethan, I didn't say I would leave with you."

"I don't want to talk here."

My mind said no but my heart said go. You can pretty much guess which one won.

Next thing I knew I was sitting in Ethan's car going who knows where. What have I gotten myself in to.
