Before you start reading, it is important to know that all the characters have a completely normal student-teacher relationship and nothing more. Snape is not aware that Hermione and Ginny like him and as a result he treats them just as anyone else.

The story starts with a flashback where Snape was presented as the new Defence against the Dark Arts teacher during the start-of-term feast. To Hermione's surprise and annoyance, Ginny was applauding happily to the announcement. Inevitably, an argument started over the fact that Ginny's attitude went against their code of pride. As a Gryffindor, she shouldn't show so much interest for the Slytherin's house. Hermione decided to discuss the problem privately with Ginny in order to find an amicable solution. As soon as Snape was brought up in the conversation, Ginny finally revealed her love for him. Hermione took it humorously and told her that there was no chance for it to happen ever, which Hermione was sure about as she secretly loved him as well. Ginny took the remark as an insult and her response was notably defensive. The conversation ended with the two of them ending their friendship.

Soon after this, Hermione went informing professor Snape about Ginny and her intention to smuggle him a love potion. He suspected some jealousy from her part, which she denied, just before getting back to the original problem. Snape was no longer interested in conversing about it and thanked her sarcastically for wasting his time.

The flashback ends here. Hermione was sleeping in the library she had fallen asleep after a terrible long day. Ginny had sat with her for hours. Professor Snape glanced at the sleeping girl curiously as he walked by.

Hermione dreamed of the night when a large group of death eaters attacked their campsite during the Quidditch World Cup. While she was ordered to take care of Ginny, the two girls got split up in the chaos. They were still friends at the time.

One day, Hermione discovered the mirror of Erised. She knew it was wrong but couldn't help spending hours in front of it, gazing at Professor Snape in the reflection, with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders.

Just as Hermione feared, Ginny started employing different tactics to seduce the Potions Master. She seemed to show more perseverance and nerve than Hermione, but Snape was not easily fooled.

One day, Hermione was shopping at the Weasley's shop on the same day as Snape, who was renewing his supply of potions. It was just a matter of time before Ginny came around looking for him. Hermione seemed to sense something was wrong but the Potions Master masterfully remained silent.

At the Christmas party, Hermione could only watched desperately from behind the curtains, as Snape began taking slow steps towards Ginny. Ginny thought he was so intimidating, that he made her shy. Leaving for him was a common reaction to boredom. Hermione struggled to mask her frustration when Snape approached her instead. He seemed to want to converse with her but preferred not to. He could sense that his presence was making the young girl uncomfortable.

In class, Snape quietly observed Ginny as she performed her patronus. Hermione watched, outraged that her beloved professor would ever prefer her ex-friend. She calmly began to conjure a blue light, and spawned an elegant otter. Surprise and fascination etched on Snape's features as he glanced at it. When Ginny saw the look on Snape's face, her expression held both fear and confusion.
