"Jussy! Come on! You have to be excited! Today is the day we are going to shift!" Terra exclaimed happily, jumping up and down. Terra was my best friend since we were kids. Coincidently, she had the same birthday, April 14. We were finally turning 16, the age all females were supposed to shift. It was also the day we were supposed to find our mate.

"Oh my God, I hope I'm Marcus' mate!" She breathed out dreamily falling back on my bed. I laughed pulling my raven black hair into a ponytail. I walked over to her and patted her stomach.

"He will probably get fated with someone like Kiera. Ugh." I grunted. Kiera was the pack slut. She slept with every moving thing. Humans included. Marcus was our soon to be Alpha. Once he found his mate he would automatically get announced as Alpha in 2 weeks. If he didn't find his mate, then the position was passed down to him at age 18.

"I hope you get him so you can shove that in her little shit face." She laughed maniacally. She sat up staring at my hair with curiosity. "Did you dye your her Jussy?" She asked picking up a piece of my hair.

"No!" I laughed. She was delusional. She got up and walked over to my bathroom and came back holding my hand mirror.

"Look." She insisted. I did as she said and I gasped. My hair had streaks of gold blonde and red in it, but it looked natural. "It looks so natural." She said taking the words right out of my mouth. I shook my head in disbelief.

"Maybe it has something to do with my wolf?" I asked trying to convince her. If I didn't she would just ramble on about it, making it a huge deal. She shrugged and went to the mirror to double check her outfit. She was wearing a white v neck with yellow shorts and black vans. She had gorgeous brown short curly hair and a naturally clear complexion, big brown doe eyes, and was about 5'1". I on the other hand was about 5'6", had raven black pin straight long hair with apparently gold blonde and red highlights, baby blue eyes, and had light freckles on my cheeks. I was wearing a black scoop neck t-shirt with baby blue skinny jeans and my white chucks.

"Ready?" She asked suddenly looking nervous. She fidgeted with her fingers and avoided all eye contact. I stood up swiftly and embraced her in a hug. I pulled back and steadied her by her shoulders.

"You'll be fine. It hurts at first but then your mate will come and help you through it." I said starting to feel nervous myself. She nodded and turned back into the witty Terra that I knew. She and I strode out of my room and down to the gathering area where werewolves shifted for the first time. Everyone who was born on this day would come out and wait for the first symptoms. From what I've heard, you first start to feel a pounding in your head. It's like your wolf is trying to connect with you. Then your body feels sore and it turns into painful cracks and splinters from your bones. Then your mate would feel a piercing connection with you and would be in slight pain until he came and helped you through the rest. It was also really rare if your mate was from a different pack but it has happened but... those people aren't around to tell the story.

We walked to the gathering area to see about three other females waiting in the shifters spot, Kiera included. Yes, she had the same birthday as me and Terra. In fact, we all used to be best friends. Our birthdays were actually how we met. In our school in grade 1, we had to sit in order by birthday. So Terra, Kiera, and I sat together and we became close. But once we got into high school, she changed. She wore slutty clothes, caked on her makeup, bleached her hair and became popular. She left Terra and I behind and never looked back. That was until I fell in werewolf training and Marcus had to carry me to the pack doctor. Ever since then she would always find the time to be cruel to us.

I was greeted by my parents and Terra's. We chatted amongst ourselves until a couple of the females declared having a migraine. Soon after a while every female had the pounding, except me. I stood there looking at the girls go through their first shifts. I heard the painful splintering of bones and screams. Joshua, the soon to be beta, rushed out and frantically looked amongst the females until he saw Terra. He ran to her and cradled her, soothing her until she was shifting with little pain. Next Lancer walked out worried and locked eyes on Kiera. He cooed to her and helped her shift. Whilst everyone was shifting, I wasn't. Several eyes turned toward me and waited for my shift.

Several hours passed and I still hadn't shifted. Then Alpha Brody, Marcus' father, declared me to be a non-shifter; a werewolf who couldn't shift. Everyone gasped, including me. The last non-shifter was over 20 years ago. To be named a non-shifter was a disgrace. Some grunted in disapproval and turned away. Tears welled in my eyes as my own parents showed obvious distaste and walked away. Terra caught my gaze and immediately knew what happened. She tried to walk over to me but her mate held her back telling her something. She nodded at him and looked at me with saddened eyes. 'I'm sorry' she mouthed as she walked away hand in hand with her mate. I sat alone in the gathering area for a couple more hours just becoming an empty shell.

"Justine!" Kiera yelled calling for me. I grunted as I stood up and ran over to her. She was cuddling with her mate and so were all the other freshly shifted females, including Terra.

"What?" I said with attitude. Her nostrils flared as she got up and slapped me. Her slapped stung horribly because her strength had increased due to her shifting.

"Don't disrespect your werewolves." She demanded. I obliged. It was common law. All non-shifters have to respect werewolves because they were more powerful. "You will become our slave from now on bitch. Got it?" She sneered.

"Yes Kiera." I said trying to hold my anger back.

"Good. Now prepare us dinner, right Terra?" She asked looking at Terra. Terra's eyes widened in surprise then she looked as if she was having a deep thought. 'Mind Link idiot', I thought to myself. Terra closed her eyes and slowly looked towards me. Her eyes filled with hatred as she looked towards me.

"Hurry up fag. We're hungry." She said smirking. I saw a flash of regret go through her eyes and as quick as it came, it was gone. I stared at her in shock as she threw me to the side. She winked telling me she was just playing along and relief passed through me.

"Go. And you're not allowed to speak unless spoken to. We will determine when you are fed and you must comply with anybody's wishes." Evangeline, Kiera's tag a long, said. I bowed my head in respect and started cooking dinner. Silent tears rolled down my cheeks as I thought of how my life would continue. 'My life was done for' I thought. I would now be known as a slave for the Red Dawn pack.

But little did I know, I would become, The Alphas Slave.
