I walked into the room and saw two chairs they had set up across from a camera. A woman I hadn't seen before was sitting in a chair angled to face the other that I assumed was where I was supposed to sit. I walk over to it, clearing my throat to get her attention. She stands up and gives me the most beautiful smile I have ever seen on a woman. She was wearing a very professional white dress, red lipstick, and her short blonde hair was styled into a bob. It was so shiny it didn't even look real. I honestly had to stop myself from touching it.
"Oh Sheena! Hi! I'm Robyn. Please! Sit down." She introduces herself and shakes my hand.
"H-hey Robyn." I say, sitting down as was instructed. I was suddenly very self-conscious about my appearance.
"So, I work marketing here. Let's just start out with that. I am going to ask you a few interview style questions. We're are going to record your answers, if that's ok with you." She says, pointing to the camera. I nod, giving a small smile. "Awesome, just be as open and honest as possible and this will be great." She gives me that award-winning smile again and I'm suddenly nervous as well. How did Johnny do with this whole interview thing? I honestly can't imagine that going well.
"Are you ready for the first question, Sheena?" Robyn asks me, pulling me out of my daydream.
"Yeah, fire away." I say and she smiles.
"Okay, so tell me about where you're from. Tell me about... your life." She asks and tilts her head to the side, awaiting my answer.
"Um... I grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis. My life was normal. My parents are awesome. I have an older sister and two younger brothers. I've always really liked music. I use to write music in my notebooks instead of pay attention in class. That's umm... how I met Johnny." I say, but am interrupted by Robyn.
"Oh yes! Can you tell me how you met Johnny?" She asks, eager to hear this news. I back off a bit, not sure how to respond. Did Johnny talk about me? Or did he want to keep that private? I didn't know, but I loved this story, and this was just a practice interview, right? Not many would see this. I looked away from Robyn and it was as if I was transported back in time. Everything about Johnny and I played in my mind as if it were a movie.
"I use to write poems in my notebook and one day, without me knowing, Johnny stole my notebook from my backpack. I didn't know it was him at the time; and I didn't realize until later in the day that the notebook was gone. I think he broke into the girl's locker room to steal it. He was new in school, and we weren't very good friends. He was older, but we knew of each other. Anyway, so I'm running around looking for this notebook, because the last thing I needed was the whole school to be reading my poetry. A lot of it was very... personal. Basically I couldn't find it, so I accepted my fate just kind of assumed that I would be the laughing stock of the school come morning. I almost skipped that next day, too, but my parents weren't like that. So I get to the school, and nothing. Nobody says anything. I go about my day completely normal until I get to free period. We were allowed to just go outside for an hour or so, and as I was walking to meet my friends I hear this stupid guy with this stupidly beautiful voice playing guitar and singing MY poems to his friends." I realized while telling this story and I was playing with my hands and smiling like an idiot to myself, but I couldn't help it. I was retelling one of the greatest days of my life. I've barely ever told anyone this story. "So I walk over to this stupidly beautiful guy and his friends, expecting them to laugh at me as soon as I get there to confront him, but actually they're listening in awe. Johnny's voice just kind of does that to you. It puts you in a trance because it's so unique. So I just watch like an idiot as he turns my poetry into actual songs. I don't think I knew what to feel at that moment, but when he finished... He just kind of looked up at me and gave me this smirk and I knew I was done. 16 years old and I knew I didn't want anybody else. So you know what I did?" I say, looking up at Robyn who seemed to be on the edge of her seat. She encourages me to speak more.
