The beautiful scenery of calm horses grazing in their grassy paddocks made her want to be with them, but right now all she wanted to do was yell to her mom; DRIVE FASTER!! She said it would be about 15 minutes until they had reached the Wanneroo Horse Markets. The shabby old place appeared in view after the car turned a corner; the red paint was peeling off with age and holding pens were full of horses. Big ones and little ones, old ones and young ones, bay ones and grey ones. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw all these beautiful horses, and could only buy one. Izzy’s dad was playing back seat driver as her mom sought a parking spot. Finally, she was able to hop out of the car and excitedly pranced in place at the idea of getting a horse. Her excitement was dulled when she entered through the front door and an awful stench wafted into her nose. Her parents exchanged glances and said

“We did tell you not to expect anything too fancy.”

She continued onwards and took a left heading down the very wide walkway looking at an assortment of horses and ponies. A Thoroughbred yearling* nickered to her as she walked past his confinement and read on his paper attached to his pen;

Two to Tango 'Tango'

2 Year Old

Thoroughbred

Colt

Destined for the racetrack

She shrugged, gave ‘Tango’ a pat and walked on. One of the pens held a 15.3ish, bay Standard bred with a dapple grey 11.2ish Shetland X Welsh pony. They both had very good conformation* *and a kind eye but the little pony looked a little bit cheeky. The papers said;

Ray of Light                                             Breeze Blue

7 Year Old Standard bred                    5 Year Old

Gelding                                                    Shetland X Welsh

Finished racing 8 months ago             Perfect Companion

“We would have room for a companion pony for my new horse, right?” asked Izzy.

“Yeah, probably” her father replied.

She tried to stay calm but had a special feeling about the un-named horse and pony. Her gaze fell over all the beautiful horses she could see and when she came back to reality she noticed she had wandered over to their pen. The horse and pony pushed up on the tall fence separating them and gazed at her like they had known her all their life.

She made her choice.

*A yearling is a 1 - 2 year old horse.

**Conformation is how the horse’s bones are placed and if they look visually appealing. They even have shows about them called: In-hand Showing.
