The summer day was too hot for its own good.
Jae sat on a swing at the public park, watching all the other children play. In one week school would start, and he was not looking forward to sitting around at desk, learning about quadratics and how they were important. News flash - they're not! He wished that he could be a little kid again, so that he didn't have to stress about anything, or that it would be summer forever.
He looked at his phone. 12:27 pm, August 18. Sighing, Jae closed his eyes and slipped his phone back into his cargo pants pocket. A slight breeze ruffled his hair, cooling him down. Next to him, the swing moved, and Jae opened his eyes to see Evanlyn, sitting beside him. In her lap sat a small black cat with yellow green eyes.
"Hey what up bestie?" Evanlyn asked, smiling that irritating smile that made people assume she was up to no good. "Having fun sitting here all by yourself?"
"No" Jae replied.
"Then why such a sad face?" Evanlyn questioned, exaggerating his expression.
"I hate school so much. It fun sometimes, but there is so much to do. I can't wait to be stressed out of my mind!" He spoke with false enthusiasm.
"I get you. School is the worst!" Evanlyn agreed. She brushed her long black hair behind her ear. "So much homework... Um. Yeah. So much homework in general..."
They laughed. They both knew that Evanlyn didn't mind the schoolwork. She was good at everything she did, except cooking and sewing. Evanlyn has been his best friend ever since grade 6, when he had accidentally spilled water on her favorite shirt. Needless to say, all had been forgiven.
"Forget about school for now." Evanlyn said. "We got one week of summer left, and we have to make it count! Want to get some fro-yo?"
"What do you think? You know I LOVE fro-yo" Jae smiled.
"Let's go, then Jae-Jae. I want to get a brain freeze!"
Before Evanlyn could stand up, the cat jumped off of her lap and started running towards the street.
"No wait! Come back here!" Evanlyn yelled, taking off after the cat. Her knew high boots clicked as she ran. Jae followed, jogging behind.
The cat ran into the street. After looking both ways, Evanlyn ran into the street after it. Quietly scolding the cat, Evanlyn gently picked it up and turned back towards Jae, who was standing on the sidewalk.
The traffic light turned red, and Evanlyn was still in the middle of the street. The cat jumped from her arms and ran towards Jae. Jae watched as Evanlyn turned around, just in time to see a big white truck come barreling towards her. He rushed onto the street, but it was too late. Her scream was cut short by the screech of tired against asphalt. Evanlyn's body was thrown backwards, hitting the street. Her neck snapped backwards, her head hitting the hard pavement. She was bleeding in several different locations on her body. The scent of her blood, now mixed in with the scent of her, choked Jae. He watched in horror as Evanlyn just lay there, not moving, not breathing. He ran over to her side and leaned over her. Ignoring the blood, he checked her pulse.
"Please please please please please be alive." he whispered, tears trickling down his face. Nothing mattered, not the man who was profusely apologizing, not the people gathered around the scene, calling 911. All that mattered was that she was alive.
Blood pooled around her, staining Jae's pants and hands red. But there was no pulse. Evanlyn was dead.
