FREY POV

I had never been the best person to take care of myself. Everyone in my pack had told me that many times, especially Beta Christopher and Trent. But there was nothing I could really do about that. My pack came first. My Alpha instinct made sure I understood that. Any time I went to bed without finishing everything I could do for the pack, my ears would start to ring, and there would be a pressure behind my eyes. It made it extremely difficult to sleep. For that reason, sometimes Christopher would have to drag me away from fixing the bathroom pipes at two o'clock in the morning, or Trent would have to get Jarred to pull me away from the sheriff's office three hours after midnight.

But, there were loop holes, or... cheats I could use to trick my instinct. I could always shirk on my paper duties to check on my pack. And by 'check on my pack,' I meant play with them, or just sit around and chat, or occasionally train with them.

It wasn't that I got bored... but my wolf was. She would pester me non-stop and make it impossible for me to concentrate on my paperwork, so usually I would just let her win when she first brought up the subject of 'cheating' on my instinct. Either that, or my hand would get tired.

I stared at the replies to invitations which demanded thank you notes, and reports of the training of my soon-to-be guards and patrolmen which needed to be checked and used to see how far their training has come since three months ago. So much writing...

Why don't we take a break? Yaps suggested. I leaned back in my leather chair and sighed as my back cracked.

Check up on the pack? I asked her, but I knew that was exactly what she had in mind.

Of course, she smirked.

Who do we look after today? I asked her, and let her think for a minute as I wrote yet another thank you card.

We haven't seen our pups in quite a while... she said, and I saw gray. I think that meant regret.

There is a reason for that, you know, I told her.

Don't worry, she said, I'll be sure to keep our temper in check around the pups.

Hmm... I hummed, rubbing my almost bleeding fingers as I thought it over. I stood up, saying a loud,

"Alright. Let's go check up on our pack's pups,"

I heard Yaps bark excitedly inside of my head, and I smiled. Happiness. I was feeling it right now. And I wasn't exactly sure why.

It's because you're finally going to be able to bond with your pack on a level you were never able to before, Yaps told me. And I'm happy, too.

I stood up and walked out of my office just to see a fist in front of my face. I looked up at a sheepish guard.

"Do you need anything, Gordon?" I asked the trainer. He shook his blonde head, no, but said,

"Sorry for interrupting you, Evans, but Marie said she needed to talk to you,"

I chewed on my lower lip and furrowed my brows. All my pack members were important, but pups were more important. They were our future, our responsibility, our legacy. They needed more attention than even Marie.

"Tell her that I'm busy checking up on our pups. I'm sure even she wouldn't argue with that. Also, if you could, could you make sure Beta Christopher knows I'm not in my office?"

"Don't want another 'missing Alpha alert' sent out to all the other packs from our Beta, Evans?" Gordon grinned. He was talking about the last time me and Yaps cheated on our instinct without telling Beta Christopher. He flipped out and contacted all the surrounding packs within an hour; the timing would have been impressive, if it wasn't so unnecessary. But he had more need than most to worry about me.
