I found this on my computer . This was an assignment to define what a family is in sociology, psychology and anthropology terms . I did this about 3 years ago.

Let me know what your up take is on what a family is .

Asking, "What is family?" is like saying, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." - Shakespeare. This goes to show there is no right answer for defining what family means. Opinions are usually shaped by personal beliefs, values, cultures or religions or society.

Emily Nett, a sociologist, suggests "family" means "Any group of people considered to be related to each other by blood or marriage." Though I do agree with this statement it is too limited. The Vanier Institute of the Family thought of family as, "any combinations of two or more persons who are bound together over time by ties of mutual consent, birth and/ or adoption/placement and who, together assume responsibilities." I agree to this first statement in that families are formed through a mutual bond or trust but this definition is followed by a list of different responsibilities so needs to be broken up and analyzed properly.

One responsibility is, "Physical maintenance and care of group members." I agree with this statement because without help, a child cannot survive on its own. This I can relate to because my dad has helped me out in so many ways that I'm thankful for. Physically he provides a house to live in, food to eat, clothes to wear, transport, education and so many other things. Another definition I fully agree with is "Affective nurturance- love." This shows without love, care and trust there is no confirmation of that protection and main hold of one unit.

To me, family is where members benefit mutually from one another. They love and trust each other unconditionally, there is caring and relying on each other and bonds are formed between people you feel extremely close to and inseparable from. These bonds can be either sexual, friendly, blood related or marriage related.

Views on families can be very similar however; they can be described in using different words and viewed in different perspectives. There is no right or wrong answer in defining what a family is.
