"Can you walk on it?" Rochelle asked her son, referring to his badly injured ankle. "This is why you don't hang out by the balcony with no adults."
Chris shakes his head no violently, rubbing the sides of his hands over his face, getting away all of the tears. "It hurts! It hurts!" He cried in pain.
"I think he fractured it." Riley frowned. She felt bad that her nephew got hurt while in her care. "Cassius can pay the hospital bills, don't worry. He needs to go to the hospital now and get that checked out."
"Okay that's cool. I'm gonna bring him out right now." Rochelle attempted to stand with Chris in her arms when they gave way and he fell back onto the couch. Riley looked at Ro in concern, she could see that Ro looked physically weak. She didn't look like this the day before at the dinner table.
Rochelle sighed and closed her eyes momentarily. Riley quickly excused herself, rushing to her bedroom. Pushing open the door she seen Cassius laying in her bed half asleep. She budged his shoulder until his eyes popped open. "Cass can you bring Chris to Rochelle's car? She's going to bring him to the hospital."
"Yeah." He answered and pushed him up out of the bed. Pulling his socked feet into a pair of shoes, Riley scrunched up her face. How could he sleep in socks? She followed him out and watched as he carried Chris right through the door.
Rochelle started to walk out behind him when Riley grabbed her arm to stop and get her attention. "Are you okay? You're taking your medication right?"
"Yes I'm fine Ri. Don't worry about me."
"And what about Chris?" Riley asked then paused. She didn't want to bring this up because then the disease would be real, it was actually affecting her sister. But she knew she had to be a grown up about it and face the problems head on. "What's going to happen to him if something happens to you when this sickness runs it's course?"
Rochelle could feel the slight burn from the tears forming in her eyes. She really didn't want to cry. "Mama will keep him. I would say you but you have enough children on your hands."
"Christopher is going to be in great hands Ro."
"I know." Rochelle wiped a few tears and quickly hustled out of the room. Riley grabbed her purse and followed suit.
Cassius helped lay Chris in the backseat of his mother's car before letting the three drive off to the hospital. He went back up the elevator and back into Riley's condominium, slamming and locking the front door behind him. He tugged his shirt off his chest, walking into the kitchen to grab a Pepsi out of the refrigerator.
He popped it open and noticed his oldest child at the table doing her Thanksgiving break homework. Asia bit the end of her pencil, her forehead crinkled in frustration. Cassius walked up behind her and looked down at the math problem on the paper. "What are you doing here?" He asked, confused his damn self after a quick glance at the paper.
Asia hesitated not knowing if him talking to her was a trick. She took a chance anyway but made sure to inch away from him a bit. "Finding the volume of a cube." She answered, her voice smaller than usual.
"Oh. Baby that's easy." He mumbled and sat beside her, scooting his chair up closer to her. Asia held in her breath as his body heat radiated onto her skin. Cassius picked up his pencil and started to write. "The length of this side is 2. So the other sides are obviously 2 too. So all you have to do is cube the number 2. And you get, what?"
"Huh?"
"What's 2 × 2 × 2?"
"4?"
Cassius placed the pencil down and looked her in the eye. Slight presperation formed at her temple, she was so nervous and scared. "It's eight Asia."
Asia cleared her throat. "Oh..." She took the pencil and wrote down the answer. "Thank you."
"How about you ask Carolyn to help you? I'm sure she did this before."
"She's asleep in my bed. I don't want to wake her up."
Sipping the soda, Cassius surveyed the house from he stood and noticed it was empty and quiet. "Where is your brothers and Jasmine?"
"Twins are asleep. Jassy is in my room watching cartoons. Can you finish helping me? I don't understand volume at all."
"Yeah I'll help you, hold on." He touched her arm softly and placed his Pepsi can beside her. Walking off to Asia's room, he opened the door quietly to see his youngest baby spread out on the bed with her eyes glued to the television while her big cousin slept peacefully beside her. "Hey daddy's baby." He smiled, walking up to her and opening his arms.
Jasmine cheesed and hopped into his arms, wrapping her legs around his torso and allowing him to pick her up. "Good morning daddy."
"Good morning baby girl. What's up?" He sat down on the bed, keeping her in his lap.
"Auntie Ri said Mr. Kane was coming to get me in two hours and I have to be ready but I don't want to leave yet." She made a pout that touched Cass internally. "I want to stay and play with my brothers and sister and you."
"You do? Well I'll just tell your mom that I'll drop you off when you're ready, okay?"
Jasmine immediately nodded her head, agreeing to the plan. "Aight. I gotta help your sister though." He stood but Jasmine latched on to him, saying she wanted to come as well. Cassius didn't mind and brought her back into the dining room. Julius sat beside Asia this time, downing the Pepsi that Cass had left.
"Nigga why the hell you drinking my stuff?" Cassius spat, mugging him and sitting on the opposite side of Asia with Jasmine still in his lap.
Julius looked guilty as he slowly placed the nearly empty can down. "Oops." He laughed.
"Oops my ass. Go get me another one ugly." He demanded. Julius got up and obeyed.
Asia slid her paper towards Cassius, her eyes never straying from Jasmine who was toying with the gold link chain on his neck. It was rubbing her the wrong way but she wasn't going to say anything. "Which one you need help with now?" He asked. Asia snapped out of her evil glare she was giving her little sister, "Uh... Number 6. It's a rectangular prism."
Cassius read over it quickly. "It's 25."
"You not even helping her, you giving her the answers!" Julius pointed out with a new Pepsi in his hand. Cassius snatched it from him and went to the next question. "That's cheating. You have to give me the answers to my homework then."
"I don't have to give you shit. Sit down."
"Where is Chris?" Julius questioned when he finally realized their cousin who was sprawled across the couch all night in pain was no longer there.
"Hospital with his mama and your mama."
Julius hoped Chris didn't snitch and tell the real reason of why he went over that balcony. They had come up with a fib that they were playing back there and he slipped. He liked his cousin Chris but his loyalty lies with his brother.
Cassius finished helping Asia with her homework when he got a text from Riley telling him to tell the kids to wake up and get dressed, so he told them exactly that and went back into the comfort of Riley's locked bedroom. All three of the girls were awoke and sitting around watching as Asia looked for something to wear for the day.
