Chapter II : Doni .

Doni (Adonis) Mitchell

I got up and walked out of the booth. I was over Tre at that moment. I was so stupid and ignorant to think that maybe, just maybe, he could find the energy to actually show me that he cares.

"Doni!" He had followed me outside but I didn't want him too. Not sure why I expected much out of him when this was just the person he was. I had to be okay with that and move on. It wasn't meant to be.

"Come here," He grabbed my shoulder turning me around, "What are you so upset about? What did I do?"

I looked at him and sighed. He couldn't even see what I was mad about: Being treated like I was second to everyone, even the ones who only want him for his looks.

"I just can't keep wasting my time doing this Tre."

"Wasting your time how?"

"Stroking your ego to make you feel better. Comforting you when all your hoes leave your side. I'm so tired Tre. I really am. I try too hard with you and I don't deserve this."

"I just got the dudes number Doni, chill. It's too early for this."

"But you did it right in front of- I don't even. know why I expected you to somehow understand why this is not okay. How many times Tre ? How many before I get the same attention and respect that all these people, who can't even spend a whole month in a solid relationship with you?"

He couldn't give me answer in the form of words but that was the validation I needed. His silence spoke for him.

"If you really can't give me an answer, then right there is the reason I can't hangout on the sidelines while you entertain everyone but me."

I walked away from him to get my car from his apartment parking lot. He followed behind me calling my name repeatedly until he realized I wouldn't give in anymore.

Later that day, I pulled up to Tre's Grandmothers house. I admire her so much. After Tre's parents died when he was twelve, she took him in and raised him. He's only had me and his Granny to support him but he still doesn't let anyone in emotionally.

Not even me.

So I get why he acts the way he does. But that doesn't justify anything.

" 'Doni, how are you baby?" she spoke rocking in her rocking chair that sat on her porch.

"Hey Grandma Avani," I smiled hugging her. I loved saying her name, it means Earth in Indian. It felt so young for her. She was beautiful of course but still.

Tre never embraced his Indian culture the way his Grandma did. The closest he's ever came to caring was bragging how good his curls were because of his genes.

"How are you beautiful?"

"Fine child," she couldn't finish because an aggressive Cough came over her. She's obviously sick and too prideful to tell us. "the question is how are you? I rarely see you and Tre not together." She finally got it out.

I huffed and shook my head, "He won't listen to me soI'm done with him. He's determined to keep me out of his life."

"You got to let him be him. He won't change until he learns." She rocked back and forth.

I stared at the randomly placed dream catchers that hung from the roof of the porch. I had to think about this for another second.

Maybe I did expect too much from Tre at this point in time. Or at least could have approached him differently than our last encounter before I left. It's just I want us to be more than just a friendship.
