Amiri POV-

"Ey Ma. Let me get that." I took the broom from my mother as she swept the floor.

"With two sons in the house you should never have to sweep a day in your life."

She stale faced me.

"What? I'm serious." I laughed.

"Amiri get away." She started laughing.

"Mama I'm serious. Look at this face." I gave her my best serious look.

"Since when do you sweep willingly?" She put her hand on her hip, holding the broom in the other.

"you right. I usually give you a hard time about my chores. But you know what, today I was thinking about how much of a wonderful mother you we're and all the stuff you do for us and I realized the error of my ways."

"Boy if you don't get yo..." She played like she was going to hit me. I ducked.

"I'm serious Ma. We all need an awakening."

"Well awakening that garbage out." She pointed to the full garbage.

"I said I'll sweep. I ain't say nothing about the garbage. That's Auggie job."

"Amiri you got ten seconds to get out my face." She went back to sweeping.

"How many more seconds I got?"

She looked at me.

"Dang Ma. I'm playing. Lighten up. You need to smile more. Frowns don't look good on you." I got the garbage out.

"You not fooling me. I know you want something." She eyed me.

"Want something? Ma You would think so low of me. That I would use your kindness to my advantage. I'm hurt. I'm hurt." I touched my heart and bowed my head hurt.

"Take that garbage out."

"I'm hurt Ma. I can't." I left the bag and was about to walk out.

"Amiri."

"I was playing Ma. Dang." I got the bag and took it out to the garbage can outside. I came back in and washed my hands.

"So Ma I was thinking, I'm your favorite son right."

"I don't have a favorite." She put the broom up and washed her hands.

I sat on the counter.

"Ma, me nor you believe that lie. Auggie ain't here you can say it."

"I told you I don't have one and get off my counter."

"You don't want to say it. I understand." I got off.

"But the record shows I'm the better son anyway. I didn't give y'all half as many problems as Auggie. No sneaking out. No lying. I believe in women's rights and that women should be treated with respect. Because if you don't respect women then you don't respect your mother. Hmm."

She looked at me unamused. "Is that a pick up line you use?"

"Yes and it works whether well. They think I'm sensitive like Drake. I got more game than Auggie don't I?" I held my hand out for my mother to dap it.

She instead slapped the back of my head and walked out. I followed her into her room, trying to state my case as to why I was the better son.

"Miri please leave me alone. I am tired. " she got in her bed.

"Imma let you rest. Just hear me out." I sat on the edge of it.

"I got better grades than Auggie. I graduated valedictorian did we forget?"

"You did baby and I'm very proud."

"And... I got full scholarships to Howard and Morehouse. Auggie ain't do that. They didn't even offer him a penny. Heck he barely in there. He on academic probation."

"He what?" My mother sat up.

"Uh-oh. I meant. He's so dumb I'm surprised he not on academic probation." I smiled.

"August is on academic probation?"

"I don't know. Not that I know of." I lied.

"You know. Tell me or imma beat your ass with his?" My mother threatened.

"Yes." I closed my eyes tight waiting for her wrath.

"See this is why I stay on his ass. You let up a little bit. He always complaining "Ma you too hard on me." Try to give his ass a little freedom and he lose his fucking mind. " she got up ranting.

"So since I'm the better son can you buy me a mini-Segway it's 400 dollars. " I said really fast.

"How long did you know this?" She got in my face. Which scared me.

"I..I. Let me pee then I'll get back to you." I ran in the washroom and closed the door.

"Open this door Amiri." My mother yelled and banged on the door.

"God save me." I whispered.

"What's going on?" I heard my dad's voice.

"Miri just told me that Auggie is on academic probation." My mother told my dad angry.

"Where he at?"

"He left out of here earlier. I don't know." My mother said.

"Call him and tell him to bring his ass home right now." My dad told my mother.

"Amiri get out here." My mother said.

I took a deep breath and opened the door.

"For you to know something and not say something, I am so disappointed in you. We try to do everything for you guys and you just..." My mother started to cry.

"Amb baby." My dad tried to comfort her. She pulled away.

"Just so ungrateful man and it hurts." She walked out.

"Sorry dad." I said shamefully.

"Get out of my face Amiri."

I walked out and went in my room. Auggie ass always messing some shit up. 😤
