Later that night--

Akshara woke up screaming.

Not loud.

Just-a gasp. A jerk. A hand flying to her bump.

The room was dark. Machines beeping softly. The antiseptic smell of hospitals everywhere.

For a moment she didn't know where she was. Then the bump reminded her.

Hospital. Baby. C-section. Fear.

She sat up too fast.

Dizzy.

Abhinav was awake instantly. "Akshara?"

She was shaking. Eyes wide. Tears already streaming.

"I saw--I dreamed--they took her--I couldn't--"

He grabbed her face. Gently. Forced her to look at him. "Akshara. Akshara look at me."

"Nightmare." Her voice shook. "Bad one. I was-" She pressed a hand to her chest. "I couldn't find you. Or Toffee. Or Abhir. Everyone was gone."

"Shh. Shh. No one's going anywhere." He pulled her into his arms. "You're here. She's here. Look-" He pressed her hand to her bump. "Feel? She's kicking. She's fine."

Baby Toffee kicked. Hard.

Like She Was Agreeing.

Akshara sobbed against his chest.

"I can't-I can't do this alone-"

"You're not alone. I'm here."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

She clung to him. Refused to let go.

"Don't leave me."

"I'm not leaving you. I'm here."

She grabbed his hand. "Don't leave."

"I won't."

"Stay. Like this." She pulled. Tugged.

"Akshara-"

"The bed is big enough. See? Plenty of space. Elphy can guard the border. She's very good at borders."

He looked at the bed.

Narrow. Hospital-issue.

Definitely not big enough for two. He looked at the tiny elephant plush.

"Elphy is going to guard the border?"

"She's very fierce. Don't underestimate her."

"Akshara-"

"Please."

He looked at her She was crying. And scared. And clinging to him like he was the only solid thing in a crumbling world.
