If I were a boy, I would be the picture perfect boyfriend.
I would remember your coffee order after hearing it just once. I'd buy flowers from the street markets, the ones wrapped in brown paper and tied with string, because I know you like things that seem to have lived a life before becoming yours.
I would hold your purse while you tried on dresses you didn't need and swear that the first one looked the prettiest because it made you smile before you even looked in the mirror. I'd carry your shopping bags until red crescents bloomed across my palms and I'd still insist they weren't heavy.
If I were a man, I would carry painkillers in my coat pocket, hair ties around my wrist and lip balm because you're forever forgetting yours. I'd black out the calorie counts on chocolate bars with a sharpie so you would never feel guilty for having something you love.
I would learn the constellations of your freckles before I learned the streets around your childhood home.
If I were your man, you would know all my contacts. I'd send you my location when I'd step outside. I'd love you so much that one day you'd stop flinching at your reflection. I'd hold you so often that loneliness would forget your address. I'd spend years convincing you that your body was never something to earn, never something to shrink, never something to apologise for.
If I were your man, you would see me cry and I will thank every lucky star that brought me to you that night.
Fathers would tell their daughters to find themselves a man like me.
It is nothing but a pity that they would never think to raise their sons to love like a girl.
