Dawn broke over Eryndor like a whispered prayer.
Kaelan Thorn sat cross-legged on the moss-covered stone at Whispering Falls, his eyes closed, his breathing synchronized with the rhythm of the forest around him. The waterfall cascaded behind him, its voice ancient and eternal, speaking in a language only the druids had ever truly understood.
And now, he was the last who could hear it.
The Verdant Force flowed through him like liquid light a quantum biological field connecting every living thing on this world. He felt the trees breathing, their roots drinking deep from the earth. He felt the deer moving through the underbrush three miles to the east. He felt the hawks circling overhead, their keen eyes searching for prey. He felt the microscopic fungi breaking down fallen leaves, the bacteria in the soil, the insects crawling through bark.
All of it. Every heartbeat. Every breath. Every moment of life and death in the endless cycle.
It was beautiful.
It was overwhelming.
It was lonely.
Kaelan opened his eyes, and they glowed faintly green in the morning light a sign of his deep connection to the forest. The rune tattoos covering his arms pulsed with the same soft luminescence, ancient symbols of power passed down through generations of High Druids.
Generations that had ended with him.
He stood slowly, his tall frame unfolding with the grace of a predator. At six-foot-three, he was all lean muscle and controlled strength, his body honed by years of surviving in the wild. His long dark hair was tied back, revealing the sharp angles of his face and the scar that cut across his chest a reminder of a battle he could no longer remember clearly.
So much had been lost.
Fifteen years ago, the Helix Dominion had come to Eryndor. Not with armies they'd learned that lesson on other worlds. No, they'd come with diplomats and scientists, offering trade and technology, promising prosperity and progress.
The druids had refused.
Eryndor was sacred. The forests were alive in ways the Dominion could never understand. To strip them for resources, to pave over them with cities and factories, would be murder on a planetary scale.
The Dominion had not taken the refusal well.
The attack had been swift and brutal. Orbital bombardment. Biological weapons. Machines that could not be stopped by magic alone. The druid order, which had protected Eryndor for ten thousand years, had been slaughtered in a single night.
Kaelan had survived only because he'd been on a pilgrimage to the outer forests. By the time he'd returned, everyone he'd ever known was dead.
The Dominion had retreated after that first assault, their forces mysteriously malfunctioning, their ships falling from the sky. The forest itself had fought back, and the cost had been too high even for the empire's vast resources.
They'd declared Eryndor a quarantine zone and left.
But Kaelan knew they'd return. They always did. The Dominion consumed worlds the way fire consumed wood endlessly, hungrily, leaving nothing but ash.
He walked to the edge of the falls and looked out over the canopy. The forest stretched in every direction, an ocean of green broken only by the floating mountains that drifted slowly through the sky, held aloft by ancient magic. Bioluminescent rivers wound through the trees like veins of light. The air smelled of earth and growing things, of life in its purest form.
