Prologue: Between the Lines
Rhys had never expected to be captivated by someone like him.
It started quietly, almost unnoticed. A soft curve of a smile. The way his curls fell just right. A voice that lingered long after the music ended.
At first, Rhys told himself it meant nothing. Just a fleeting impression. Just another person passing through a gallery he didn’t really care about.
But something shifted. A brushstroke of feeling he could not name. A flutter in his chest that came too fast and refused to fade. He found himself noticing small details—how his presence made him feel lighter, how his smile could make a room seem warmer, how his voice seemed to hum through Rhys’s own thoughts.
He tried to push it aside. He told himself he knew who he was. That his heart was steady and predictable. That he had nothing to question.
And yet, in the quiet moments when he thought no one was watching, Rhys realized something he had never considered before.
Maybe he did not know himself as well as he thought.
Maybe he was ready to discover something new.
And that something had a name.
Jai.
