The day starts like any other, cold white walls and the endless drone of the AC humming through the facility.
The air tasted faintly of disinfectant, sterile and untouched by the outside world.
Today isn't like the others, though. It's the day I've been training for. The endless hours, days—perhaps even months—finally coming to a tipping point where my days aren't secluded. I'm finally going to get assigned my first subjects. Subject S1 and K2.
I grab the clipboard left on my desk sometime during the night—no note, no explanation. Things just appear here.
"Subject S1: Cold, manipulative, cunning. Humanoid, long white hair, blood red eyes. S-Class creature, extreme caution advised." I pause, trying to imagine the creature in my mind. The paper doesn't offer enough details, which is where I guess my job comes into play. "Subject K2: reserved, observant, detached. Humanoid, short black hair, blood red eyes. S-Class creature, extreme caution advised." I hum thoughtfully to myself, setting the clipboard back down on the desk gently. I move around the room methodically, putting on my white lab coat and gathering a few supplies before grabbing the clipboard again, and heading straight through my bedroom door.
The hallway was a few degrees colder, as if to amplify how impossibly alone I was. The same narrow white walls peered back in every direction. I force a smile, practicing the expression I'll probably need soon. My steps echo clinically, following me until I come up to a door with a scanner on its side. I slowly press my hand to it, listening to the machine activate, scanning my hand methodically until a click echoed through the hallway, the doors unlock and slide open automatically.
I step forward
And freeze.
Subject S1 is standing inches away from the giant glass panel that separates us. His eyes flick briefly toward the ceiling camera before returning to me, his smile widening. The moment our eyes connect, fear rushes through me. I feel like I'm drowning in the ocean of blood staring back at me. I stand, frozen in time, unable to determine if the fear is mine or his.
His smile feels like a sharpened blade pressed to my throat.
Then, his voice, so seductively smooth, cuts through the air instead. "You took longer than I expected."
His voice echoes softly against the glass.
I don't answer.
I take a steady breath, making a mental note to keep my calm mask tightly woven into place as I continue moving to the center of the room, just a few feet away from the glass panel. My smile gives away no indication of the shaking nerves beneath my skin.
My eyes beg me to cling to him, to absorb every ounce of him, but I force them to move. They glide over the second figure in the room, subject K2. He sits on a cot pressed tightly against the back of his glass enclosure. He shows no effort to even glance my way, his black hair framing his sharp features.
I turn my attention back to Subject S1, his face giving no hint of his thoughts or feelings, but I was made for this.
I summon the power in my veins like I've done hundreds of times before in practice, letting it swim through the air, invisible to the eyes. It passes through the glass with expert ease, slowly surrounding S1, and then I hear it.
How dare she look away from me, as if I'm so easily discarded. She's gonna regret the second she looked over me.
His eyes narrow slightly, his head tilting as if he senses something brushing against his mind.
My practiced smile stays firmly over my lips, my hidden advantage sparking my confidence into a steady flame beneath my ribs as I finally speak.
"Good morning, Subject S1 and K2. I will be your new Observer going forward."
K2 doesn't move from his spot on the cot, but S1's smile deepens only a fraction, his words flowing with smooth venom. "Oh? They've given us a new handler? How perfect, especially after how beautifully we broke the last one."
My expression doesn't falter.
His thoughts flow through me, our connection holding steady.
Such a shame this new doll is beautiful. I almost don't want to break her. It's so hard to find something worth looking at in this dull cage.
I take a steady breath, pushing my power past him until it surrounds Subject K2. Immediately, K2 looks up, his blood-red eyes locking onto mine... as if he can feel my power surrounding him.
"Stop," he says, his voice commanding and strong.
My power recoils slightly at the command, like a startled animal.
I pull it back quickly. Making enemies of the Subjects on my first day seems unwise.
My gaze shifts to Subject S1. His eyes widen slightly as they dart between Subject K2 and me. A small, knowing smile creeps across his lips, and his eyes lock on to mine as he speaks.
"Well now," he murmurs. "Our little toy has a gift."
My smile tightens but I ignore the nickname. My voice comes out calm and calculated as I shift the conversation.
"My task today is getting to know both of you. Let's start with your names."
Subject S1 scoffs, startling both of us before he quickly regains his composure.
"Our names?" He scoffs. "No one's ever asked us our names before." His voice slithers between clenched teeth, a muscle twitching in his jaw as he keeps the smile plastered across his lips.
For a moment, even the humming in the facility feels louder. My smile softens a touch.
"Well, I'm asking."
"Then what's your name?" His eyes narrow on me, as if trying to figure out what game I'm playing with them so he can stay two steps ahead.
The silence between us feels overwhelming, as if each second somehow grows louder. I take a deep breath, realizing I have a decision to make. My next move could change how this game is being played.
"My name is...Valeria."
"...Valeria," he repeats slowly. "Interesting...I am Silas." He gestures towards Subject K2 in the back, "and this is my brother, Kieran."
Kieran's eyes flicker towards Silas for a brief moment.
