CHAPTER 1: The Broken Signal
The afternoon sun over Bangkok was a stifling, golden weight, trapped between the gleaming spires of the temples and the glass towers of the city. Inside the high-security perimeter of the Presidential residence, the air was different—filtered, chilled, and silent.
Kao stood like a statue near the north entrance. His black suit was a second skin, shielding him from the world. His eyes, dark and unreadable, scanned the courtyard. To the outside world, he was a weapon in a suit. To himself, he was simply a man counting the hours until he could go home.
His earpiece crackled with the low-frequency hum of the security net.
"All points, Eagle is moving to the library. Stay sharp."
"Copy," Kao murmured, his voice a low vibration.
In the brief lull of the afternoon, his personal phone—tucked deep in his pocket—vibrated. He shouldn't have answered. It was against protocol. But the caller ID flashed 'Pho' (Father), and a rare, small smile tugged at the corner of Kao’s mouth. He stepped into the shadow of a stone archway.
"Pho? I’m on duty," Kao whispered.
"I know, I know," Akkara’s voice came through, sounding breathlessly excited, punctuated by the ambient noise of a busy street. "I just couldn't wait. The meeting at the ministry went better than I dreamed, Kao! They’ve cleared the funding for the old village clinic. I’m heading to the market now."
"That’s great, Pho. You’ve worked hard for that."
"I have. And I’m tired! Listen, I’m going to pick up the beef and the chilies. You have to be the one to cook tonight, son. My back is acting up, and besides, I’ve been craving your Pad Kaprao all week. Don't be late. I want to eat while the rice is still steaming."
