It was nineteen fifty seven, Rock ‘n Roll’s early years,
When my poem-tunes first reached the public’s ears.
To remember me as a teen idol, you may be too young.
I wrote a song about Diana, and it became number one.
A series of evocative love songs followed:
“Put your Head on my Shoulder”
Put your head on my shoulder
Hold me in your arms, baby
Squeeze me oh so tight
Show me that you love me too
“Don’t Ever Leave Me”
Don’t ever leave me…
Don’t say goodbye…
If you do, I’ll be the lonely one,
I’ll sit down and I will cry…
I sang my big hit “Lonely Boy” for the movie, Girls Town.
I’m just a lonely boy, lonely and blue
I’m all alone, with nothing to do
I’ve got everything you can think of,
But all I want is someone to love
I was born in Ottawa, Canada, and I’m of Lebanese descent.
In nineteen ninety, I became a naturalized American citizen.
I have my own star on Canada’s Walk of Fame,
There in Ottawa, a street bears my name.
I am sure for some of you reading this, nothing yet rings a bell,
But many musicians and singers have covered my work well.
Tom Jones made “She’s a Lady” a smash hit:
Well she’s all you’d ever want,
She’s the kind they’d like to flaunt and take to dinner.
In nineteen seventy four, my hit song “(You’re) Having My Baby,”
Which I wrote for my wife, gained criticism for its chauvinism:
The woman could have “swept it from (her) life,” but she had not,
Because it was “a wonderful way of showing how much she loves him.”
This is a love long; what I am saying in the song is that there is a choice.
A high point in my career was when I wrote the words
For Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.” Lisaner has included a video
Of a live performance of Frank Sinatra singing my best poem.
I am honored to have been Lisaner’s very first rock ‘n roll idol;
The first full length record album she ever bought is me singing
My “Big 15.” She was twelve years old then, and still has my album.
