Original Characters
Maria Armando: Diego's mother who died of pancreatic cancer while he was in a coma. She and Diego originated from the Dominican Republic, but traveled back and forth between home and Japanifornia in search of his father, eventually becoming dual citizens in the process. She raised Diego as a single mother, initially struggling to find good work due to her limited English and lack of education, but worked as a registered nurse for a decade before her death. She was a no-nonsense, religious, and traditional, but loving parent, who befriended Mia as they awaited Diego's recovery. She had three sisters back home and parents who passed away before Diego finished law school. She had been in love with Diego's father but spent 28 years believing he abandoned her and her son, only learning the truth a year before her death.
Jack Myers: Diego's father who died three months before Diego was born. He was a tall, handsome, and cheeky California native who fell in love with Diego's mother while in the Dominican on a business trip. Had learned Spanish after moving to a primarily Hispanic neighborhood following the death of his father at the age of three. When Maria found out she was pregnant, Jack asked her to move to California to live with him, but Jack secretly fretted, trying to prepare for her arrival. While he seemed well-off during his trip, in reality, he only earned a lower-middle class income. He used all of his savings on nicer amenities than what his company provided for his trip and on an extra week's stay to be with Maria. He started working two full-time jobs to pay for the baby, but fell asleep at the wheel as a result, sharing Diego's love of coffee but also his inability to metabolize caffeine. Jack never told Maria of his financial troubles and second job, embarrassed by his perceived failings as a man. Countries apart and not yet married at the time of his death, Maria was never informed of what happened to him.
Lydia Myers: Diego's paternal grandmother whom he was estranged from for 28 years. She resented Maria, blaming her for Jack's death. Lydia hadn't met Maria before Jack died but falsely believed that Maria was only using him for money and a green card. Ultimately, Lydia regretted lying about her identity when Maria found Lydia's number in the phonebook, and was unable to connect with Maria again until she saw the news of Diego's poisoning. When Diego woke up, he initially brushed Lydia off for her abandonment. Eventually, they moved past their conflict and Lydia took Diego in after his release from prison. Only had one child and her husband died in a workplace accident when she was 24. Struggled as a single mother for years, ending up in an eight-year abusive relationship out of financial necessity. Many years later, a lucky break allowed her to move up the ranks within the federal government, and she had amassed a comfortable, upper middle-class living but had no family to share it with.
Jill Skye: Lana and Ema's mother who became pregnant with Lana when she was 17. She was an only child who had a contentious relationship with her parents because of the pregnancy, getting kicked out after they learned of the news. She reconciled with her parents eventually, but the relationship never fully recovered, listing her best friend as the guardian for her kids in her will instead. Met her future husband in an AP chemistry class during the tenth grade, and they saw The Breakfast Club on their first date. They married at the courthouse shortly before Lana was born instead of going to prom. Years later, Jill went back to school to become a dental hygienist. Died as a drunk driving accident victim on her and husband's way home from a Christmas party. She was only 37.
Aaron Skye: Lana and Ema's father, who was the same age as Jill when he died. Grew up in a dysfunctional environment, either living with his mother, who had substance abuse issues, or in foster homes. His mom died when Lana was a preteen, he never knew his dad, and had minimal contact with his half-siblings. Dropped out of high school and sought legal emancipation, so he could get his own apartment, and Jill could move in with him after she was kicked out. Years later, obtained his GED and became a social worker. He and Jill had Ema after they became more financially secure. He and Jill were fun, flexible, but somewhat dysfunctional parents to Lana, growing up right alongside her. They were more conventional in their approach to raising Ema.
