Don't Go Where I Can't Follow
The night was chaos incarnate. Smoke curled through the broken windows of the warehouse, black and thick, choking the dim light of the flickering fire that had erupted in the corner. Debris littered the floor, sharp and jagged, the remnants of whatever struggle had started this inferno. Every step was a careful calculation; one wrong move could send them plummeting into ruin.
Bang Chan's chest heaved as he pushed forward, scanning the shadows for the others. Felix was ahead, moving with that lithe, determined grace that never seemed to falter. But even Felix had a limit, and in the smoke-choked air, that limit was beginning to show.
"Felix!" Bang Chan called, his voice hoarse. "Wait up!"
Felix didn't slow. The fire reflected in his amber eyes, giving him a look of fierce determination. "Chan, just keep up!" he shouted over the roar, but Chan could see it—hesitation flickering in Felix's gaze. He was on the edge of running too fast, of disappearing into the chaos.
Bang Chan clenched his fists. He couldn't let him go—not when everything was crumbling around them. He pushed harder, dodging falling beams and shards of glass. The warehouse groaned, the unstable structure threatening to collapse with every movement.
Felix turned a corner too quickly, nearly tripping over a fallen pipe. Bang Chan grabbed his arm, yanking him back. "Felix!" he barked, voice raw. "Don't go where I can't follow!"
Felix froze, chest heaving, and for a split second, their eyes met. In the firelight, his usual calm resolve was replaced with something raw—fear, but also trust. He nodded slightly, letting Chan hold him for just a heartbeat longer before they both continued.
They moved together, a unit of two against the chaos. The fire hissed, water from the sprinklers spraying hot steam into the air, making visibility almost impossible. Every step was a gamble. Every breath burned. But Chan stayed close, never letting Felix out of reach.
At one point, a section of the ceiling collapsed ahead of them, cutting off the path. Felix's eyes widened, but Chan's hand found his wrist again, steady and grounding. "This way," Chan said, tugging him toward a side corridor. "We move together."
Felix gritted his teeth, voice barely above a whisper over the roar. "I thought... I thought I could handle it alone."
Chan shook his head, firm but gentle. "You're never alone. Not when I'm here. Don't ever forget that."
Felix nodded, swallowing hard, and for the first time that night, he allowed himself to rely completely on Bang Chan. Every step they took together was synchronized, an unspoken rhythm born of trust forged under pressure.
Finally, they reached a small exit at the edge of the warehouse. Outside, the night was cold and quiet, a stark contrast to the chaos they had just fled. Felix sank to his knees, catching his breath, and Chan crouched beside him, hand on his shoulder.
"You scared me," Chan admitted quietly, voice low but heavy with emotion.
Felix looked up at him, amber eyes glinting in the moonlight. "I almost went too far," he confessed. "But... I knew you'd follow."
Chan gave a small, tired smile. "Always. Don't go where I can't follow, Felix. Not ever."
Felix leaned back against him, letting the warmth of his presence steady his racing heart. Around them, the fire continued to crackle in the distance, but for this moment, they were safe. Together.
