Unothorized Visit

Start from the beginning

"I came on my own, I had this— feeling— that I needed to check on you." He seemed confused by his own statement, his yellow LED indicating he was still processing it.

It made you wonder again how long he stood at the door, how long he had hesitated before leading up to the decision of knocking against it. The dampness made it seem like he had been there a while.

His words and the thoughts they brought made you fall silent.

He wasn't supposed to feel anything. He wasn't supposed to act outside of his mission.

Showing up to your home, this late at night and in the middle of a storm, you knew this couldn't be something his software told him to do. And yet, here he was.

Lightening struck, illuminating the room for a brief moment.

He studied you, using the moment of light to examine the way your expression changed. He continued his thought, "I was not instructed to do so. I came despite my parameters flagging this interaction as unnecessary."

It wasn't making sense. He wasn't making any sense.

A realization hit you, could he the final piece? He could be sending back reports about you right then and there. The thought made you grow paranoid, terrified of the possibility.

You took a step back, the suspicion trumping logic. He didn't protest in the created distance, it seemed he was expecting it.

"Are you sure they didn't send you?" Your voice wavered, your eyes shifted to the floor at your feet, unable to look at him now. "They could be using you too."

You had no reason to be trustful right now.

He took the step towards you, gently closing the gap that you had created.

His face was still wet, he stood so close to you now that you could see the droplets sitting against his skin.

You didn't move away this time, letting the distance be broken.

"I came on my own," he assured you, repeating his earlier statement. "No cameras, no tricks. I came here for you." His voice was soft, calming. His LED yellow, he wanted you to believe him.

You nodded, slowly coming to accept that his answer was truthful. His face showed no signs of a lie, you saw no threat in him.

He might actually be the only one you could trust right now. After all, he had betrayed everything in him already that moment he reached out to save you on the rooftop.

The rooftop. You still hadn't come to understanding it. The event was leaving you with hesitation still.

"When you saved me," your voice was low, unable to meet his eyes anymore, "was that really your choice?" You knew he had already explained himself, but you needed it again. You needed something that was true.

"There is no code for what I felt in that moment, no programming that made me do what I did. I just did it, I guess because I wanted to."

You took a breath, feeling uneasy as the words floated throughout your mind, repeating them over and over. Your gaze slowly shifted, you looked down at his hands which were perfectly at his sides.

The movement was slow but you reached out, your hand going for his— but you stopped just as your fingertips were about to touch him, and let your hand drop downwards instead.
