Every single character has a dark past they can't talk about! What the heck?! Everyone has an abusive/dead parent. Everyone is drop dead gorgeous, but bullied for being ugly! Everyone is super depressed and cuts.
Honey, let's take a quick walk through the garden. Look at the flowers. They are all beautiful in there own way. Some are red, some are yellow, some are a mixture of colors. Some have thorns, others are soft. Each flower is different in this garden, but each flower makes the garden a bit more beautiful.
That's how your characters should fit in a story! Not every single one should have an emotionally scarring past. Sometimes they do, but not everyone does.
However you chose to do it, every character should make the story better. Just like each flower makes the garden more beautiful. Unless you're a crab apple tree. Man, I hate those things.
